Volksopern Cafe - Vienna

I visited this restaurant twice for lunch during my visit to Vienna, on both occasions I was only looking for a light meal and was recommended to the soup of the day with bread and bottle of foam water, on both days the soup was excellent,... My biggest surprise was when I went to pay, I was asked how much I wanted to pay on my experience, in all my travels around the world this was a first for me, I offered to pay 10 euros, which I believed to be more than fair for both parties. A truly unforgettable experience highly recommended.

We dived here for a quick coffee before we visited the ballet. Sitting and decor were utilitarian, but service was fast and friendly and excellent value. Right over the street from Volksoper.

Called in for a quick meal an hour before going to the Volksoper. Although we were served our drinks fairly promptly, given a menu, and reassured by the head waiter that there was time to eat before the show (as "everyone who comes here is going to the Volksoper!") no-one came to take our order. The head waiter stood at the end of the bar, sipping on a pint of water and staring into middle distance, which was odd, given our earlier exchange. The menu looked OK, but by the time a waitress was eventually told to take our order, it was too late. This wasn't representative of the excellent Austrian hospitality we've been used to!
