This place is on the edge of the market area and convenient for food and drinks. The prices are fair and we enjoyed a coffee and cake, sitting in the sun.
This review is focused more on the staff rather than the food at Dukes. Despite being a fan of the restaurant and enjoying their soup, the reviewer had a shocking experience in the restroom. After a nice meal on a Friday afternoon, they had to use the toilet which was messy and not properly cleaned. Despite there being bleach available, the staff member did not bother cleaning up after themselves. The reviewer was left disgusted and concerned about the lack of hygiene practices, and it has made them hesitant to return to the restaurant in the future.
The staff at this restaurant were lovely and the cream tea was delicious. It was reasonably priced and the location was perfect for sitting and people-watching. There is both outdoor and indoor seating available, as well as a to-go option. The restaurant was much larger than it initially appeared, but this did not impact the quality of service.
The service was very good, quick and efficient. We ordered sweet potato and pepper soup with a cheese scone and a cup of tea. The soup was very salty and yellow in colour. There were a few orange grated bits in it which we presumed...were sweet potato. I could not taste any sweet potato because it was so very salty. It tasted of a salty thick sauce. The cheese scone was o.k. It had cooked grated cheese on its top but didn’t have a strong cheese flavour. The cup of tea arrived with the tea bag dangling in it. They didn’t even bother to make it in a teapot. All in all we felt the quality of the food was poor.
