My partner had the lamb shank, which was delicious, but I opted for the monkfish which unfortunately had a strong odor that even caught the attention of nearby diners. The staff handled this situation well, swapping out the dish for seabass which was tasty, and even giving me a complimentary glass of wine. They also did not charge us for the meal, which was a nice gesture. Breakfast the next morning was great. Overall, we had a pleasant stay at this inn and would recommend it to others.
This restaurant is fantastic! The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They also welcome dogs, which is a big bonus. It's definitely worth the drive through the forest to get there. The mushroom ketchup Stilton sauce was a standout and highly recommended.
The drive to this pub was through a beautiful wooded valley on Exmoor, the Royal Oak looked very pretty from the outside, we had a lovely welcome once we were inside, the fire was alight which was lovely, it was difficult to chose from the menu as there were so many things that sounded good. We chose home made soup (cauliflower cheese) chicken cooked in lemon and thyme with a mushroom sauce and chicken parfait and Venison pie, the accompanying vegetables were just right. Both dinners were really good probably the best we have had for a while. The staff were very friendly.
This charming 14th century inn, located in a secluded valley in Exmoor, is a true gem! During our two-night stay, we experienced a peaceful and undisturbed atmosphere in the beautiful Exmoor valley. Spencer and his team were incredibly welcoming and took great care of us. Our room was absolutely stunning, featuring exposed beams, a large comfortable bed, a TV, and modern amenities like Alexa and internet access. The room had a large window overlooking the valley with sheep grazing on the hills, and the soothing sound of a nearby brook. The food was excellent, with a variety of locally sourced options that were fresh and delicious. This inn is one of the best we have ever stayed in, offering a pleasant ambiance and wonderful surroundings to relax in. There are plenty of nearby attractions to explore, such as Porlock Weir, Oare church, Doone Valley, Dunkery Beacon, and quaint little villages. The area was adorned with colorful daffodils and primroses, adding to the charm of our stay. A big thank you to everyone for a delightful few days.
Superb food, excellent wine and 5 star service. Choice of fresh fish was amazing razor clams, mussels, swordfish, crab all delivered that morning. Cannot recommend highly enough.
