From the deck to the living rooms, spacious kitchens, and bedrooms (15) each with their own bathrooms, we were thoroughly impressed. We loved the beautiful vegetation, spotting deer, and relaxing in the hot tub (despite the jets needing repairs). We will definitely be coming back.
Interior and rooms are very outdated and the Zoo is extremely overpriced. The land that it's on, is beautiful and the deer are everywhere and come up close to you. The exterior of the resort does not disappoint. The little gift shop has a lot of cute items, souvenirs, etc. Something for everyone in there. The store staff is very friendly and helpful.
Reviewers often mention that the furniture at Oglebay might be outdated, but I personally didn't find it to be a significant issue. The chairs I sat in were incredibly comfortable, and the bed provided a cozy and restful sleep. What truly set Oglebay apart was its charming old grand lodge ambiance, which made our stay truly extraordinary compared to the typical chain hotels we've visited before. The surrounding scenery was breathtaking, and the well-maintained gardens added to the overall enjoyment of our two-night stay, where we were attending a friend's wedding.Although an unexpected and severe summer storm knocked out the power for 12 hours on a Saturday night, from 8 am to 8 pm, the hotel's engineers handled the situation expertly by providing half power through a generator. While some may complain and seek refunds due to the inconvenience, I personally adopted a positive perspective. I had a wonderful time in this beautiful place, and despite the unfortunate timing of the storm, my mission of enjoying a pleasant stay was successfully accomplished
I stayed at the Wilson Lodge for two nights over the weekend. There were many family-friendly activities available, some of which were complimentary for guests such as the outdoor pool and splash pad. However, other activities like watersports and visiting the zoo required purchasing an activities wristband. The Lakeside room we stayed in was spacious but a bit outdated. Although we didn't have a lake view, we enjoyed the patio outside our room. We had a great time walking around the gardens and the lake on the paved trails, as well as hiking behind the nature center in the evenings. The property is very walkable with paths allowing guests to explore the grounds at their own pace.
This place is so special! I love the history, the gardens, the spa and more. Wheeling is beautiful and Oglebay feels like a second home. HOWEVER LOL...I am concerned with the design decisions that have been made lately. I just reviewed the upper west wing rooms and they have ruined those rooms by making the design look like a Motel 6. I also stayed in a cottage in 2023 and the decor looked like it was from Walmart. Very mismatched and untasteful. Work that was done in the past, like in the lobby main, the west wing and lakeside have been very tasteful and enhancing of the Oglebay aesthetic. I hope someone considers this opinion that they need to consider design more thoroughly moving forward, Oglebay was a sophisticated estate and it should remain a sophisticated resort.
