The décor is typical Swiss mountain chalet and the service was great. A German/Austrian waiter called Andreas served...us and he really was excellent. Upon realizing that my sister only spoke English, he offered her an English version of the menu and spoke to us in English throughout. Top marks to him, keep it up Andreas. I wish servers like him were more common in Zürich where service and hospitality are despicable. I ordered beef broth (bouillon) with egg for starters and the St. Galler Rösti for mains. The broth was intense and warmed my soul in the cold weather. It could have done with a better garnish and presentation, but the flavour was very good. The main course consisted of a traditional Swiss German shredded potato pancake (rösti, pronounced rushtee) cooked in lashings of butter with a St. Galler veal bratwurst sausage and onion gravy served in a cast iron skillet. The sausage was ok, it could have been grilled a bit longer but the rösti was the best I have ever had in Switzerland. It really was very very good, soft on the inside but crispy on the outside and very rich with lots of butter. The onion gravy, homemade, complemented the dish very well. My sister ordered Züri Geschnetzeltes as it came highly recommended. It was delicious, well cooked, creamy and tender veal with a buttery yet crispy rösti. The only problem was that after the first few bites, the flavour was a touch too over-powering for my sister. The dreaded aromat had struck again! For the uninitiated, aromat powder is an artificial seasoning/flavour enhancer that is as common in Swiss German kitchens as salt is and often replaces it. While it does add a touch of umami' savoury flavour to foods, it is unfortunately used toooo much in Swiss German dishes and totally dominates the flavour of the meal often resulting in everything tasting the same. However, having lived here for several years, I've gotten used to it. Unfortunately my sister, who resides in the UK, found it over-powering. My partner ordered deep fried chicken wings with fries. We were really surprised to find this bar snack item on the menu especially considering this is a fine restaurant with very good food and excellent service, however, my partner whose palate is basic, ordered it. The fries were good, eventhough I'm sure they came out of a bag from the freezer, but the wings were not good at all. They had no seasoning whatsoever and just tasted of chicken. Even sports bars do a better job. The sauce that accompanied it was far too sweet and almost tasted like honey and cream... strange. Nevertheless, I like this restaurant. If you ignore the chicken wings, which shouldn't even be on the menu, the food is good, the service top and the ambiance warm and comfortable. When you're in Wildhaus, give it a visit.
Impressive 4 course meal at a special function for 30 people. Flexible, unobtrusive but very friendly service with well cooked dishes served to a good Swiss standard. Great atmosphere and a most pleasurable afternoon.
