We were warmly welcomed by the staff when we arrived earlier for drinks, but the atmosphere changed when we returned for a late afternoon meal. There was no welcome this time. We ordered a vegan pasty and chips with vegetables, while my wife ordered the steak and Ale Pie with chips and vegetables. The meals were brought to our table without any questions by a worker. Eventually, a young bartender came to ask if we needed anything, so we requested mayo and mustard. However, no one checked on us to see if our meals were satisfactory. Other staff members were preoccupied guiding dogs in and out of the garden, letting in the cold air. The meals themselves were disappointing, with the dessert being undercooked and tasteless. My wife did not even finish her cake, and no one offered us a sweet option. We couldn't wait to leave. At the time of payment, I was hoping another employee would inquire about how our meal was, but unfortunately no one did. It was probably for the best.
We stayed at the campsite this year and had a very warm welcome at the restaurant. The food was excellent and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. They didn't even raise eyebrows when we ordered two child portions of food for our dogs (we forgot to bring dog food) and provided dog dishes as well. We highly recommend this charming pub.
We had a warm welcome and a nice lunch in the krone, brie, bacon cranberry sandwich was delicious and huge! chunky cheesy chips were delicious. beautiful location and staff very helpful
Lots of pubs do a decent Sunday roast, many do a really good one. The Crown is one of those. But what separates The Crown from most is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. Here's a story: A group of 7 of us from...a nearby campsite had booked Sunday lunch in a locally nearby rural pub but found we were unable to get taxis. So we caught the bus into Devizes and looked for a pub that could accommodate a group of 7 on the spur of the moment. The landlord of The Crown went out of his way to find us space in a pub that was already well booked for Sunday lunch. Not only did he pull a couple of tables together but checked with us that we'd all be comfortable sitting at this makeshift group dining table. Staff were friendly and attentive and as I said in the first paragraph the food was excellent. The Wadsworth's beers were well kept (but then again you'd expect that in a pub next door to the brewery Prices were on par with other pubs making this reasonable value too This is the sort of pub I want to give my custom to, one which goes out of its way to keep customers satisfied.
