Ate here last Friday night at 6pm and it wasn't at all busyA bit hard to find as it's upstairs at the ForksDidn't need a reservation.
Dined at Sydney's at the Forks last night with a business group.
Nine of us were at this restaurant two weeks ago for a business dinner. I had not been here for a nuber of years and was looking forward to an enjoyable meal and conversation. The conversation was great, the meal not so much.A few of us were surprised to find that the only option was a prix fixe menu. There were appetizers ordered for the table. None were memorable, except that the Scotched Eggs were a first for many of us and were quite tasty. The main meal choices ranged from Rack of Boar (which looked and tasted like pork chops) to Duck, Lamb, Trout, Beef, and Lobster. The beef medallion-like entree, ordered medium rare, was overdone but not too bad. The steelhead trout was not great, according to my dining buddy, and the lobster was reportedly just okay. The Apple Tart for dessert was a disappointment, with small scoops of apple on a hard cookie crust. The Creme Brule was very good. All in all, the $54 Tab for a three course dinner was quite pricey given the disappointing quality of the food.
This was our first meal in Winnipeg and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is located in the Forks Market, which has lots of interesting eateries--some of which look delicious--but Sydney's is the only real fine dining establishment in the market. We shared some delicious New Brunswick oysters served with a delicious, tangy relish: they were super fresh and delicious. We had an appetizer of octopus and greens: very delicious. The other appetizer was a kale salad with sweet nuggets that didn't come off so well: the blend of sweet with the salad didn't work so well. The main course was a 7 ounce New York steak, which was perfectly cooked and succulent. Dessert was a crème brûlée, which was delightful. The waiter was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful with respect to my gluten allergy.
