Steak 'n Shake - Winston-Salem

It's worth noting that the restaurant has transitioned to a completely counter-service model, as indicated by a sign at the registers reminding patrons to dispose of their own trash rather than leaving it on the table. I found it a bit annoying that they still request tips at checkout, despite there being no waitstaff, but I guess that's just a remnant of the past. Overall, it's very easy to enjoy a satisfying meal for two, drinks included, for under $20 here, without it feeling like typical fast food. You can't say that about many sit-down restaurants these days!

I really enjoy Steak ‘n Shake, especially the location in Winston Salem near the mall, as it's the closest one to me. Although the service isn’t the best—this has been an issue even before the pandemic—about 80% of the time the food is great. I have had some pretty negative experiences with both the food and the service, but overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. If the employees were a bit more diligent, this place could be fantastic. As of my update on 5/1/21, however, I have to say that the staff here is really lacking. The managers should feel embarrassed to have such underperforming employees.

I had a wonderful experience at the restaurant. The waitress provided excellent service. The double burger I ordered was absolutely delightful, topped with salsa, jalapeños, and crispy onions. The fries were fantastic, especially with the sprinkle of parmesan, although I wished the portion size had been larger given their size. They were delicious, nonetheless. I also ordered a side of coleslaw, but it was a bit bland, so I had to add some salt and pepper to enhance the flavor. The strawberry cheesecake shake was simply heavenly.

Many restaurants have struggled to find their footing during the pandemic, trying to balance physical safety with the dining experience, often with varying degrees of success. Although Steak 'n Shake still faces challenges such as long wait times and quality control issues, based on my experience during this visit, I would recommend it as a good option for a meal. In fact, we probably had the best meal we've ever had there.
