We sat down for about 15 minutes and a few more people came along to sit down and were rudely refused entry for not instantly purchasing any alcohol 2 of which were designated drivers and one a recovering alcoholic. We were just sat quietly enjoying a drink and we were met with without a doubt the worst service I have ever experienced in my life, which I am not using lightly. I would avoid this place like the plague. As a local I would recommend instead of wasting your time here going to: The Noel Arms, The Bakers Arms, The Volunteer Inn or The Cotswold House Hotel to name a few.
Having had a very poor dinner experience a few months ago we returned because they gave us a voucher to encourage a return visit! Food was ok but so expensive for what it is. Prawn cocktail £22 you are having a laugh! It is interesting reading other reviews on here about not being allowed in for drinks when plenty of space inside, and being made to feel unwelcome. This is exactly what happened to us last year and clearly nothing has changed. This place lacks a feeling of warmth and such a pity as it used to be such an excellent hotel.
Devon Cream Teas what could be more simple for a Hotel of this renown? Earl Grey tea option, with lemon, for 2 ordered. It came with milk, one teabag in a big pot (weak as dishwater, and frankly at these prices we expected leaf tea! , no lemon…and no scones. Reminded waitress after waiting 15 mins we had no lemon…and no scones…the weak tea going cold and could she please therefore re fresh the pot…she offered us more hot water, for the now, insipid lonely teabag. Another 10 mins, lemon comes, no refreshed pot….still no scones. She apologised for the ‘printer in the kitchen’ being broken? A waiter then appeared…with no scones…and apologised for the delay as there were 40 cream teas ordered in front of us! Would have been nice to know 30 minutes ago when we arrived. So we left the cold dishwater and left! Definitely not The Lygon Arms of old and frankly, if I were James Martin, I’d get my name taken from above the door asap.
We were met by a rather arrogant doorman who looked me up and down and asked if we were staying ? I said no. So he said we are full and wen to close the door, I said we have a reservation in the restaurant. So we were let in. At reception it was clear my reservation had been lost but was questioned as to I had actually made one. NOT A GOOD START ! The waiter was as dull as dish water. Our starter...prawn cocktail was probably the best I've ever had. Steak and chips for main was just average. Way to much salt on the chips though. My wife had a very disappointing cod. There was zero atmosphere in the restaurant, no Christmas music.
When we arrived we were asked if we wanted to leave our coats but were then ignored and left to hang them ourselves. Not a big issue but much worse was to follow. We asked to have a drink in the bar before dinner but were not shown to a table. We eventually found somewhere to sit and went to the bar to order drinks. We C were told to sit down as they provided table service. After more than 15 minutes no one had come to take our order so I went back to the bar where I was told to go back to my seat and told that someone would come straight away to take our order. We waited another 5 minutes and were just about to leave when a waitress came to take our order. We waited another 5 minutes for it to be delivered at which point the waitress came back to clear the empty glasses that had been left on the table by previous guests. After a while we were asked if we wanted to order more drinks but when we said we would like to go through to the restaurant now the waitress just walked off. At the dinner table we waited another 5 10 minutes before being asked if we’d like to order. When a different waitress brought the drinks she gave them to the wrong person and my partner’s wine glass was covered in red wine in the outside clearly there had been a spillage on route which had not been cleaned up When i ordered a second glass of wine it was delivered to my partner who already had a half full glass of wine whilst mine was clearly empty. There were plenty of staff around and some of them knew what to do but waited to be prompted whilst the other staff members appeared not to have been trained properly. Overall the service was very disappointing given the reputation and pricing of this restaurant
