It wasn’t really worth the extra money compared with food in local pubs. Gluten free options advertised were not available and a second choice had to be made. This was handled with apology from the server and a discount to our bill was given at the point of paying, which was good customer service. However, I still suffered a stomach ache from either glutens being present in my food or from cross-contamination- both of which show no understanding of gluten-free provision. We’ll swerve this place next time….
My family and I went out to eat last night and enjoyed delicious sausage and mash, as well as fish and chips. The sausages were of excellent quality and the fish and chips were amazing. The portions were generous and we had a lovely evening thanks to the attentive staff.
Stopped here with a friend for lunch after a long walk on the ridgeway. A quintessentially British pub with a good selection of pub food options! Catered well for vegetarians as well as meat eaters. Portions were large and delicious, exactly what was needed! The car park was busy on arriving too which I only saw as a good sign, especially on a Tuesday lunchtime. A selection of lighter bites was available at lunchtime as well as the full menu. The pub attracts a lot of tourists, being so close to Chequers so lots of photos were taken by other customers but staff were fantastic at noticing and getting them to stop so we could enjoy our lunch in peace!
Four of us dined at The Plough. Three of us ordered the cod and chips, but unfortunately, it was the worst we had ever tasted. The fish was grey, tough, and definitely not cod as advertised. We only ate because we were hungry. However, the chips were very nice. We had this dish a month ago and it was delicious, which is why we decided to return.
After waiting a week to calm down, I wanted to provide a more balanced review of my experience at this pub. While a house feels like a home with people in it, a pub becomes inviting with experienced staff who can handle unexpected situations smoothly. In short: - My party of five arrived for a lunch reservation. - The pub became busy with other diners, including a large group of 12-14 people. - We were informed by our server that there was a kitchen issue, so only jacket potatoes and sandwiches were available. We ordered accordingly. - However, the large group and a few other tables received hot meals, with the explanation that they had pre-ordered. - It was frustrating to see plates of chips being prepared as we ordered more drinks at the bar. - Our food never arrived, and when we inquired, we were told there were many other diners to serve before us. - Despite checking with our server again while she offered more drinks, we were informed that there were still six tables ahead of us. Disappointed and hungry, we decided to cancel our order, settle the drinks bill, and leave. It was disappointing that we couldn't eat due to the kitchen issue, but I understand that problems happen. However, it was frustrating to watch others enjoy their meals while we went without. It's not fair to see those who came after us being served before us, and it's simply disrespectful to dismiss our concerns. I won't be coming back, and based on my friends' experiences at other pubs nearby, I would recommend trying elsewhere. Please note that the quotes from the staff are not exact.
