I had a question on one of the 4 elements on the menu and the server had no knowledge of the elements. he had to ask the cook if the fish was local and then I was told that he was from washington state, which seems strange. the server also have not knowledge of the wine presentation, while waiting 3 hours on a table, I saw several server asking them the bartender how to open a bottle champagne and how to present a bottle of wine. this should be basic server knowledge. in the meantime, the female bartender was amazing, but if they wait hours for a table they better have someone else behind the bar. the line was sometimes 20 people deep.
There are not many restaurants in yellowstone now ready to wait as obsidian does not take reservations. we are here at 4:45 when they are open at 5 and we should be there at 4:30, as there was a line down in the room. eating was really good. my son had the untilon short ribs that were delicious and I had the trout that was also very good. the menu is expensive, but, given the type and quality of the food, not much more than they find in any city.
We had 2 dinners during the stay here, but not try breakfast. menu options were limited throughout the park, so there were only about 4 Entree options. but I would say that this was still one of the better places in the park, and the service was also very good. especially we enjoyed the huh, which was tender and juicy.
We ate here our second night in yellowstone, after a terrible experience in the night before the old believe dining room. this meal could not have been different! the service was excellent, the menu was good value and varied and the food was delicious. they even had a few vegan options that are not available in the park in the round. I'd eat here in a way.
Due to the pandemic worker shortage, the dinner menu at the Obsidian was short only choice of two salads, a few appetizers, and five entrees (there is a dessert list, but we didn't look at it), but very welcome after a long day of sightseeing. There is an adjacent lounge, if you want to have drinks while waiting for a table. We had dinner twice during our two-day stay at the Snow Lodge. Was lucky the first night that pan seared trout was available, it was perfectly cooked with crispy skin. Bison short ribs were very good, accompanied by tasty gnocchi. Roast chicken was good. Ravioli were okay, a little overcooked, tomato sauce was thick, too much of it. Prices comparable to a good bistro in major US cities. Our servers were very nice, deserve plaudits because they sure were busy. Kitchen evidently short handed, our salads came at the same time as the main courses, but hey, that's how we eat at home, so no biggie, I'm happy just to be here during this crazy time.
