Van Oud’s ‘t Nest is a pleasant somewhat traditional café and restaurant in a green part of Rijswijk. I have dined there a number of times, the food is always reliably solid and service pleasant. One of the few restaurants that serves fried liver with onions and bacon, a favorite of mine.
I had seen this small restaurant when cycling through the adjoining park. It is nestled at the side of the road between the houses. There is room to park bikes and scooters. There are tables outside and in. Part of the terrace is covered by an awning. They have a lunch menu that includes pancakes, grilled sandwiches, croquets-madame/monsieur. The croqueta-madame came with a side of potato salad served on a few spinach and arugula leaves. For some reason the guests and the server seemed surprised to hear English being spoken. Two guests had their dog with them. The dog was permitted to roam about and approached my table several times hoping for scraps. The outdoor terrace tables have ashtrays. I left immediately when a couple sat next to me and pulled out their cigarettes. No non-smoking outdoor options offered here. Unenthusiastic service offered to non-Dutch speakers. There is a breakfast and dinner menu. Nice, relaxing spot. Should probably also try tea and cakes so it can become an afternoon hangout or pit stop after walking the dog.
