We brought Gabby our freshly caught mahi and she worked wonders with it. Every course was thoughtfully prepared and had well balanced flavors (a consistent issue with the food in Mexico). The Peruvian ceviche was amazing. Gabby and Jorge were professional yet welcoming and you will regret not eating here!
We had seen pretty good reviews and we knew one of the Thursday night musicians. So, we decided to give it a try. We arrived at our 7 pm reservation that we had made a week prior. We were told that we didn’t have a reservation. The owner proceeded to go back to a table and ignore us while he prepared a salad. He eventually came back and argued that there was no reservation. We explained that we had spoken to him. He then proceeded to get some tables together for us. We had a group of 7. He then just glared at us the entire evening. The owner REFUSED to break our check into 3 checks upon arrival. Whereas, the table next to us had 4 checks!! Three of us ordered a beer, they brought 6 beers. We assumed it was some type of promotion. We ordered 3 more beers and they brought 6 more. When the bill arrived 3 hours later, they charged us for 12 BEERS at 70 pesos a beer. It was a complete bait and switch ordeal. The dinners were not that good. Stuffed chicken breast was like chicken jerky with banana filling. Stroganoff portions were way too small for the 300 pesos charge. The flambé shrimp was only 4 pieces of shrimp. The steak medallions were too small. Whole experience 3 hours waiting for food and the 20 minute wait to get our one bill while owner ignored us. Music was the only thing enjoyable. We spent way too much money for so little food. We had to have more food when we got home. Prices are Way overpriced! 70 peso beer !! NO! Never again will we go back. So many enjoyable experiences at other restaurants in Zihuatanejo.
Our family of 6 had a wonderful dinner here. Everyone loved their food, the service was friendly, and the restaurant had a nice ambience. I’d definitely recommend this place!
We have been going to Puerta del Sol for about 10 years, having visited most of those times when we make our annual return to Zihua. A nondescript place on the road side on the way to Playa La Ropa from the town behind a yellow painted building with a sunny logo, there's even a window to the kitchen on the sidewalk. The proprietor, Jorge, is most hospitable who almost threatened to close the place down having opened a second location in town, perhaps sparked when a hotel was built in front of his otherwise spectacular view to Zihuatanejo Bay which ended up blocking half his vista. But the view is only part of the story and thankfully he stayed and closed his in-town location. Jorge's specialty is working the flames with his flambe´ dishes which he performs at your table. Food is tasty with a good selection on the menu. His daughter, Gabby who works the kitchen, cooks up the other roasted and fried items. She does a mean fresh fish entree which could be ordered in several manners of sauce and herbs. My only suggestion is skip boiling the vegetables and instead grill or pan fry with olive oil for better taste and presentation. Don't know why they boil veggies as so many Mexican restaurants. Oh and don't leave without ordering the Spanish Coffee for which Jorge puts on another fiery show. Finally the music. Mostly 60s and 70s rock classics with some big band Sinatra and pre-British invasion Americana is piped over his speaker system. Jorge used to sport a tied back pig tail, but he seems to have trimmed that off, but that doesn't stop him from getting into the music and singing a few bars with passion. From Jan through March he brings in an excellent jazz singer, Patricia Carrion. You must go, eat and soak it all in. And very reasonably priced, but not quite the prices it was 10 years ago. Enjoy the Passion!
