Yams and the piece of were good. My daughter's liver and fried okra was yummy. She had to share because wasn't much I had left to eat .
Food was very good and the prices were so reasonable. I had blackened white fish, blue cheese coleslaw, red beans and rice. Husband had fried chicken, collard greens and yams. Our bartender, Candy was very good and our waitress Aretha was very sweet.
I ordered the fried chicken accompanied by collard greens, candied yams, and cornbread, while someone else in our group enjoyed shrimp and grits—I've learned that shrimp and grits is a popular low-country dish from the Carolinas and Georgia. Another person opted for chicken and waffles. Typically, I've found that cornbread, collard greens, and yams are rarely done well in restaurants; I've never encountered those sides at a restaurant that could match the quality of a home-cooked meal. However, Marques absolutely nailed all three dishes. Moreover, restaurant fried chicken is usually deep-fried, but Marques seems to pan-fry his chicken, which makes it reminiscent of how my mother and grandmother used to prepare it. Those in our group who had chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, or macaroni and cheese were equally impressed by their meals. Additionally, the pricing was reasonable, and I appreciated the modern atmosphere of the restaurant. The server and chef were also friendly and attentive. Overall, this is a fantastic spot if you're craving American Southern food or "soul food." P.S. Thank you for sending my hat back to me in Massachusetts—it’s one of my favorites!
I've been on the hunt for gizzards, and a friend suggested a restaurant called Marquis. I tried the gizzards there, and while they were well-seasoned, they didn't seem fresh—they tasted like they had been prepared long before I arrived. My friend ordered the chicken gumbo, which was smoky and beefy without any seasoning. It was supposed to be chicken and sausage gumbo, but there wasn't any sausage in it at all. After just one bite, I ended up throwing away my plate as well as my friend's.
I’m visiting from North Carolina and had to give this place a try. The gumbo, jambalaya, and fried chicken are absolutely amazing. It's the best food I've had in a long time. This was only my second day here, and I’m definitely coming back tomorrow for a third meal. Thank you for the incredible food! No need for photos; the food says it all.
