The food is good and often includes some creative items. The wait staff is made up of students and not always spot-on but always friendly.
We sometimes eat at Spiegeltent before a show because it's convenient. Great drinks, the salads and shareboards are creative and tasty. But the sandwiches are mediocre at best (tasteless white bread, small amount of filling) and the entrees are overpriced for what you get.
Ordered an asparagus salad, fresh greens, tasty but only three spears of asparagus and paid extra for four puny shrimps. Friend had a tomato and mozzarella salad, mostly bread. Service was good and on other occasions I have enjoyed their sandwiches, good wine selection, antipasto generous, was shared by five of us.
I ordered Thai shrimp mango salad. It arrived doused with dressing and no visible shrimp. I sent it back. Instead I got their regular salad and added shrimp. For $20 I got three shrimp and unappealing frisee as greens. Not much else. My friend got a panini which was not really a panini. No panini bread in sight. It was more of a grilled cheese sandwich. Food is poor and overpriced, but they get away with it because it is the only place to eat before a show during the Bard Summerscape Festival.
We were very pleased that the restaurant was available for an 11AM lunch before the pre-opera talk at Fisher Center at Bard. Our waitress was friendly, didn't pretend to know something when she didn't but was helpful about finding out, and accommodated our request for separate checks without a complaint. Selection of food choices was nicely adequate without being overwhelming.
