This is a real gem to find in a city with moderate restaurants. el Rincon del Conquistador is a real jewel of a restaurant here in Antigua, a city filled with too many mediocre restaurant. We visited this Friday night and were amazed at how good the food was. We started with the Camembert appetizer. What a wonderful combination with the plum cutney! My wife had salmon and I had a steak. Both were perfectly prepared, not overcooked and the spices used were amazing. Tonight they had a special with mushrooms (Chanterelle? that was a pleasure in my taste buds. For steak they were prepared in a reduction that gave an incredible taste. This is not your USA Steak House style....it was delicate, full of well balanced flavors and perfectly paired with the steak. For the salmon of my wife, they were prepared in another style, again a perfect pairing for the fish. It is obvious that the cook needs the time to choose components at the meal to supplement and then prepare them excellent. We asked the Maitre for a recommendation for a bottle of wine (they have a nice selection of French wines at reasonable restaurant prices (Q 200-250 series and were very satisfied with the Bordeaux he recommended. It paired nicely with our meal (Normally we only drink one glass or two, but we finished the bottle! Desert was a Nougat-Gletsche, which is slightly sweet, slightly tart and an amazing way to clean our palate at the end of the meal. My wife and I fought over who would lick the plate clean! If you visit (or visit Antigua, you will know that there are hundreds of terrible or moderate restaurants and just a few gems like these. (As the terrible get so high reviews is about me Take the time to visit a 5 minute drive outside Central Antigua. The neighborhood is SAFE (I live only one block away and the food is worth the trip. Amazing food, Chef Noe is incredible. Serving and ambience are exactly what you would expect from a French restaurant.
The Antigua Gourmet Club had about 12 of its members attending a dinner at this restaurant last night. The entrance options were Coq au vin, duck, dorado and a vegetarian risotto. All participants were very satisfied and the service was excellent. We complement the owner manager, Pascal and the boss, Noah. We had a very nice time.
The environment, service and food were excellent. The checks could have been handled a bit more quickly so over all 4 1/2 stars.
