Being a family-owned and operated establishment made the experience even more special. Overall, it was a fantastic time with great value. I would rate it 5 stars across the board. As someone in a wheelchair, I found the staff to be very accommodating and helpful.
She hurried us to place our order and added extra charges for everything, including a single additional piece of toast for the oysters we ordered. In the past, we’ve typically received a couple of extra pieces of bread without issue, especially since a dozen oysters only comes with four small slices. Moreover, she didn’t check in with us to refill drinks or offer any condiments for our seafood dishes. We found ourselves repeatedly asking other staff members for assistance, despite the restaurant being nearly empty. As for the food, while it usually meets expectations, the chargrilled oysters were a letdown this time. They were merely steamed and appeared to have just butter poured over them, rather than being genuinely grilled. Additionally, they are pricier here than at most other places in the city, so I would suggest skipping that dish. However, the fried seafood platter is consistently fantastic and did not disappoint on this occasion.
The layout was alright with a surprising amount of space inside; it's larger than it seems from the outside. A friendly young server welcomed me and took care of me throughout my visit. For my appetizer, I chose one of my favorites—seafood gumbo—which turned out to be quite different from any I’ve had in New Orleans or elsewhere. Although the roux was exceptionally thick and not to my taste, I didn’t let that stop me from exploring the rest of the menu. I ordered a platter that featured a variety of items: crab balls, crawfish pies, shrimp, oysters, and fish. Everything was tasty except for the fish, which was overly breaded. I would definitely order the shrimp, crab balls, and crawfish pies again—the flavors were delightful. The mac and cheese was unique, made with large pasta shells, and quite good, but the potato salad left much to be desired as it was quite bland. The menu offered many other tempting options that I could have tried if I'd had more room. I love frog legs, but I couldn’t fit any more in. I was impressed with the portion sizes, which were enough for at least four meals and reasonably priced. Incredible! I went in the early evening when there were only a few other customers. Maybe the crowd gets bigger later on? I’ll go the extra mile for good food, but believe me, if you want a loyal customer, it better be great! This place is a bit off the beaten path, and to be fair, I’m not sure it was worth my time or effort overall. I would likely choose not to return in the future. Why? There are too many fantastic restaurants, diners, and eateries in NOLA that I still need to try. I can’t afford to miss out on a sure thing for a maybe! Until next time!
Jack Dempsey for the win! I hadn't been here in years and the portions quality hasn't fallen off. The inside is simple and clean and it's set up to feast no matter the group size. The combo I wanted wasn't listed on the menu. I wanted fried crawfish and frog legs but the server made it happen to my surprise. The platter was flawless full of crunch and seasoned just right. The platter came with 1 side I chose the Mac and cheese which was also good with the right amount of cheese coverage. Overall service, food and price point all a win.
Feels like a restaurant at the end of the world, situated across from some abandoned site that looks like it's out of The Last of Us. The restaurant interior also feels like a time capsule, something out of the 80s/90s. But that charming nostalgia is a strong point for a reliably delicious meal at a reasonable price. Gumbo: A light way to whet your appetite. Has the great viscous texture expected in gumbo. Generous amounts of shrimp and sausage pieces to make it quite meaty. And lots of nice spices. Stuffed Flounder: Looked so old school, like something your parents would order on a fancy date night in the 80s. The flounder was nicely spiced and thin, though quite meaty. Underneath was a huge pile of crab stuffing. Kinda felt a crab cake that never got crispy. So many great flavors and textures. Very indulgent. Seafood Au Gratin: So rich and sinful, this kind of felt like an appetizer. And technically it is, but they also added a dinner portion for a little more money. If you like cheese and cream, then this is for you. Plus a very generous amount of crab. Though they served it with bread and your choice of side, but I could totally see this being amazing with tortilla chips (not offered). Baked Macaroni Cheese: A little weird to eat it in ziti form, but the cheese was delicious. Both the bit melted on top and the cheese sauce underneath. Fries: Kinda standard with a lightly spiced batter.
