(the restaurant we ate was El Huerto Centro, near the Museo del Caribe, but it is the same chain My friend and I ended our visit to the Museo del Caribe and were hungry. Specifically, we were hungry for vegetables, a food category that seems to be overlooked in Barranquilla for meat and curtains. So, we were absolutely thrilled to see a vegan restaurant just a few minutes walk from the museum and drove right there. The name was the garden perfect! You must have delicious products! The restaurant was small, but in the early afternoon relatively crowded what we took as a good sign. However, there was no menu that I had in a precarious location, especially those who are not fully familiar with local cuisine. Nevertheless, we speak Spanish fluently and asked about the available dishes. The specialties that the waitress was listed were lasagna and spaghetti. Not exactly the vegetables we were hoping for. Then she mentioned that we had the ensalada especial that came with broccoli, cauliflower and otras cosas. Broccoli! We had not seen this vegetables throughout our time in Colombia and signed us! So we ordered two salads and two juices. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. After maybe fifteen minutes the juices came. They were good, nothing excellent, but decent fruit juices. Then we waited more. We had the chance to admire the faded farm topics posters, and observe how all our colleagues end and leave their food. After at least 25 minutes the salads arrived. It's never a good sign if you have to ask what a salad ingredient is. Most vegetables are easily identifiable, and so the white styrofoam esque substance on our stack of iceberg salad was a real secret. We asked the waitress. Vegan cheese. In addition to the cheese there were some picky cauliflowers, two small tomatoes, some olives and maybe a carrot. There was also a dehydrated looking eggplant of unknown origin (drilled? Sun dried? Can? But what really came out was the hot dog. Apparently, Hot Dogs are such an important, essential part of a salad that was considered necessary in a vegan restaurant called The Garden to put a cut soy hot dog on the salad. Sighs. Perhaps we would not have been so disappointed if it were not for our high expectations (again this would be the expectation to find real vegetables in a restaurant called The Garden). Perhaps other pleasure can be found in tasteless iceberg or skillfully olives. And maybe we just ordered wrong, and the lasagna was incredible. But I just know it was the most disappointing culinary experience I had in a very long time. Oh, and there was no Broccoli.
I like the concept of this place. It's easy at home and good. The place offers a set menu for 12,000, which includes a soup, main course and water based drink. I had a dish of rice, with boiled vegetable salad and soy mix. The meal was hearty and healthy and the portion size was good. The restaurant itself is sweet and could, at a maximum of probably 60 people. There is a space for interior seats, but I recommend the mini outdoor garden area. On the front of the restaurant there is a shop that sells a variety of quinoa-based products from shakes, muesli, burger mix etc. Staff are efficient but not exaggerated. Overall, great place for feeling a home cooked healthy meal. I would go more often if I lived here.
They do not have a menu, only the meal of the day which consists of a soup, a main dish and a drink. In our case the vegetable soup was delicious. The main dish was a hamburger made of lentils, some bulgur and a salad. The drink was a cold lemongrass tee. Everything was really good and the pice also (paid 11.000 COP). If you are looking for a vegetarian option, this is the best place to go. They also have a little shop where you can buy all kinds of ingredients and healthy stuff.
I come from Canada and was here visiting family. I was so shocked and extremely proud and happy to find this place! It makes me so happy to know theres a place like this here. They had so many vegan options and the food is so great! Love everything about it!
