Very good food. Excellent root beer! The owner took the time to stop by and say high. Would definitely make a point to stop in and eat here again if passing through the area
Taking a Stand. While doing a little research for our trip north I ran across an article about the chili bun trail . Being a chili dog man from way back, my curiosity was piqued; just what was this 'chili bun trail ', and how do I get on it? Turns out, back in the day, mostly in eastern Kentucky, folks made some chili so fine they decided to cut out the middle man (the hot dog) and scoop the stuff directly into a bun. Hence, the chili bun. Unfortunately, there arent many of these places left today. However, a little research led me to Corbin, where there is still one of these joints in operation, called The Root Beer Stand. I no longer had to wonder where we would be stopping for lunch on our way to the Motor City. So, we pull into Corbin and after a few lefts and rights we come onto what has to be the place. Except their is no signage, but the lot is packed and the address is correct so we slid into a spot. We still cant see a single thing that says Root Beer Stand, not even on the menu signs. Another odd bit is that nowhere on the menu does it mention chili buns. A gal comes over to take our order. I ask if they have chili buns and she says that they do. So we order one each and a fry to split and of course a couple mugs of root beer (which is what theyre renowned for). We dont have to wait too long before shes mounting the tray on my door. I pass the wife her goods and then unwrap the deal, and there it is; some very ugly, chunky chili. I take a bite, it tastes like nothing. No hint of garlic, or spice, or anything. Just thick slop. The only thing it had going for it, is that it wasnt greasy. My wife ate half of hers and tossed the rest. The frozen, out of a bag crinkle cut fries were fine. The root beer was nice, but certainly not worth buying a jug of, as I saw some of the locals doing. I did notice that some of the bags that were coming out of the place said Crabtree Restaurant Inc. and after a little research online I found out that is who operates the place. Kind of weird. If Mr. Crabtree is the original owner (as Ive been told), why would he change the name after 50 years? And why are there no signs with the name of the place? Anyhow, look, I understand that some of you had your first kiss in the parking lot of this place 45 years ago, but that doesnt mean the food is still any good in the 21st century. I know all Corbin has is this place and the KFC museum going for it and of course you will defend it ferociously, telling me to take my big city taste buds and stick em where the sun dont shine, etc. But sorry folks, the food here is garbage, perhaps a baby step up from McDonalds and other trash like that but not certainly anything I would recommend to any chili lover. To put it another way; Ive had better chili out of a can. Grade: D (the sweaty, obese women who work here didnt do much for our appetites either) Taking a Stand.
