Flounder is muddy, salty and has a strange taste, eating will be in republic texas prices, but 1/2 the quality. sushi is very good, and steaks are decent, but mostly everything else is sub par. more bar than restaurant. the personal is good. but for the money there are a few better local options. good place to drink too much and on TV with others who have drunk too much, I suppose. but if you want a romantic, fine culinary experience at a fair price the republic texas is a good option if you want a funny night dave buster is good if you want to eat a bar and live music, blackbeards or pier 99 check these boxes with really good eating. scuttlebutts was great 15 years ago.
I went for happy hour, best deals on drinks on appetizers. it has a very good local feeling, and everything I ate was great. I wanted to try out the challenge of the hot wing, but they were out. I had the fish and chips (recommended) buffalo wings, and kokos garnelen (also recommended), and the margarita. the service was somewhat slow as it was the post-lunch, I think we also ordered sushi, but the waiting time for an hour, so we skipped it. we finished everything that was ordered. perfect lunch time in hot summers!
We did our research trying to find the best seafood and Scuttlebutt’s was in the top 3. So we decided to give it a try. When we walked in we were shocked that the wait for 2-people was going to be 45 minutes to an hour. But we were determined to try it so we went to the bar to grab something to drink. We ended up sitting at the bar and noticed A LOT of open tables and yet we still hadn’t been notified that we were up. When I asked the hostess she said, “We aren’t sitting those tables b/c the kitchen is really backed up.” So we decided to just eat at the bar. We met some really fun locals that were having Scuttlebutt’s cook up their red snapper that they caught the day before. They even offered us some to try. It was delicious. I had the seafood fettuccine and a cup of clam chowder. The clam chowder was very interesting b/c it had ham and bacon in it as well. It was very tasty but I’ve never had clam chowder that didn’t just have potatoes and clams. The seafood fettuccine was delicious! The bartender who waited on us actually lived in Sheridan, WY (which is only an hour and a half from where we live). All in all, Scuttlebutt’s was WELL WORTH the wait.
We have eaten here every time we visit Padre (3times in last 4 years) do you have to show up to get on the waitlist but then you can see the time left on a website…. But I have no idea where the recent bad reviews come from….my son enjoys the burger sliders and we have had Oysters, Blackened Mahi, sushi rolls, and fish baskets …our Server said it was just his 3rd day here and was very attentive and checked in with us often ….. what is strange about this place is what it looks like from the outside, but once inside they do have live music 6-9 with an acoustic guitar player, and there are enough TVs to watch just about any sports that are on…. The Pina Colada’s have always been good. I never write long reviews but seriously I have not had a bad experience here.
