We booked 3 double rooms and 1 twin room. The building is Grade 2 listed so don't expect luxury like the Ritz. Some parts and furnishings need attention, especially a thorough cleaning of the carpets. We all agreed that there were some little things that could be improved, like white paint splashes on the black floors, but overall it didn't detract from our experience. The rooms, dining area, and general areas including the toilets were very clean. The beds and pillows were soft. Parking might be a bit difficult, but you can always rearrange later if needed. The food is from an upscale menu and definitely cooked to order, including breakfast. The menu can be found on their website and may not suit all guests. The staff were very hospitable. The price was £115 per room including breakfast, plus a £20 per night charge for our dog. We had no complaints about our stay here. It is a great place to stay if you are visiting Chatsworth House, as we were there for a country show for 2 days. Our total bill was £430.00 for 4 rooms with breakfast, plus 7 meals and a bar bill of £220.00. It was definitely worth a try.
We have been to this interesting establishment before and enjoyed it but had never eaten. Building is interesting and has some history to it. Four of us had lunch this time, the beers are well kept and were very nice. Food was average to quite good, three of us has burgers and fries and a fourth the soup and some fries/chips. The fries/chips would have been nicer had they been cooked for slightly longer, the burgers were good but the meat was v dense indeed a bit of a chew, although tasty. The soup was mushroom, it was way too thick and served luke warm on a large fancy plate, had the plate been heated? So not bad but some room for improvement we think. Interesting interior.... We did notice v. thick dust on the monitor that was switched off at the 'reception ' desk.
Booked 4 rooms for friends reunion, all were poor quality, faulty heating, poor wifi, water stained ceilings, shower door fell off, tv didn't work, owner refused any reduction on an over priced rate. Booking.com no help either. Take my advice and stay in the premier inn in matlock a few miles away.
Excellent lunch. Good veggie/vegan options. Friendly service. But the heating was off it was cold.
We were extremely disappointed with our lunch experience. The chicken Caesar sandwiches we ordered tasted like tuna, and when we asked the kitchen about it, they explained that they had used anchovies in the sauce. It was clear that they hadn't tried it themselves as it was unpleasant. Additionally, there was no mention of anchovies on the menu, which could have been problematic if we had allergies. We were given a 10% discount on the bill, but that didn't make up for two uneaten meals and two hungry customers. They also didn't have ketchup for the kids meal, and the wine was overpriced. Overall, our birthday meal was a letdown.
