The menu choices are quite vast and varied offering salads, steaks, burgers, sandwiches and great combos like shrimp with steak and great side dishes like
The mike burgers haven't changedBun, meat & sauce exactly as you remembered it and it's divine.
I've already written at length about how Mr. Mikes does not distinguish itself in any notable way from any other chain restaurant like Boston Pizza, Original Joe's, Brown's Social House, Earl's or Moxies. The interiors are all the same drab brownish colour (typically with minimalist ceiling decor); they have various pictures or murals all over the walls; lighting is usually dim; and the TV monitors typically play sporting events. A lot of the menus follow the same jumbled format as well, replete with photos for those too lazy to read the descriptions. And what's on them is pretty standardized fare, too: wings, potato skins, battered shrimp of some kind, salads, pastas, burgers and steaks. Mr. Mikes is no exception to this -- the only difference here is the inclusion of "Mikes" in some of the names; otherwise; if you were to be blindfolded and brought into any one of the above-mentioned eateries, you'd likely have trouble identifying where you are. The one exception would, of course, probably be Boston Pizzas nachos -- so terrible that they're easily identifiable. That said, my partner and I visited this Mr. Mikes location for lunch a while back. It was surprisingly quiet for a Mr Mikes (probably because of the hour), so we took advantage of it and enjoyed a nice conversation over some food. We ordered the wings; Mini Mikes (sliders); the Hot Lobster dunk; and the Oscar's Salmon Lobster. The appetizers were all really good: the wings were cooked properly and the mini Mikes had a wonderful flavour to them. For me, though, the Lobster dunk was the star: rich and creamy with visible lobster (surprise!). We made quick work of the latter! As for the Oscar's Salmon Lobster -- this was the biggest crime of all: a beautiful piece of salmon WAY, WAY over-cooked. It was incredibly dry; even the lobster topping couldn't save it. The kids working in the back really do need to learn how to cook salmon properly -- it's not that difficult, but they just murdered this poor thing.Nonetheless, our meal was, on the whole, enjoyable. And while I may criticize Mr. Mikes for not distinguishing itself from its competitors, the appetizers are usually pretty good and worthy of many a re-visit.FOOD: 3/5SERVICE: 3/5VALUE: 2.75/5RECOMMENDATION: Mr. Mikes has recently started fashioning itself as a higher end "casual" restaurant. While I'm not necessarily a fan of their makeover (it makes them even more generic), and I feel the slightly increased price point isn't justified, the appetizers are still pretty noteworthy. Good for a casual bite!
