Our server was good and insisted on removing them from our bill (we asked her not to, because we wanted the kitchen to take our concerns about the food seriously). We ordered this appetizer to go with the beer -- which itself was okay, but with a stout that was a bit overly hopped and a brown ale that was somehow between a brown ale and a stout. The reason we went with the "steak" tacos was that we wanted to find something that wasn't deep fried or fried in butter or the like. It's fine if everything on the menu is like that, and in fairness the server did say she could give us brussel sprouts in hoisin or something similar, but we thought that steak tacos were hard to mess up. Oh, well.In fairness, my wife and I used to be homebrewers and have our views about when a brewpub or microbrewed beer shows a lack of restraint. Maybe you're not as fussy as we are, and maybe homebrewing gave us somewhat strong opinions about what we like and what we see as gilding the lily.Ergo, take our reactions to the beer with a grain of salt. You'll find a whole pile of salt in the God-awful food, so finding a few grains shouldn't be difficult. And again, the server was nice about it, and the beer wasn't too bad.
Had lunch here and we tried the Buffalo Wings(very Good) the Corn Dogs(OK) the Steak Tacos(Good) and the Beef Dip(Good). Service was a little slow and the deck tables for four are too small for everyone's plates. Beer was good and they have a large selection, heavy on the fruit and flavoured beers. Best thing is to just site back and watch all the people walk by.
Hoo boy. I've been curious about Malt & Mortar for a while. They have a decent sized menu that looks pretty tasty and a beautiful looking place. And beer! A decent beer menu!However...Stood at the door for 10 minutes as servers moved past us, no acknowledgement (oops). We were finally seated and it look another 10 minutes for a server to inquire if anyone was taking care of us (there wasn't). She rolled her eyes and bad mouthed who was supposed to be serving us (yikes). Ordered a Jerk Chicken Wrap with couscous and a Sangria Salad (seems like a quick order). In the meantime, because we were sitting by the door, customers were being turned away because there weren't enough staff to serve them even though there were lots of empty tables and space at the bar (wish someone had told us that). 40 minutes later our food finally came out and we immediately asked for our bill. That was the most efficient thing to come out all afternoon. The food was good? Couscous was fresh with lots of feta and the wrap had a lot to curry flavour. The salad was missing the pumpkin seeds which made it lack that necessary crunch.
We came here for a friends birthday and the food was strange.... Almost no one in the group enjoyed their meal. The chip nachos were okay but again strange. Also it took a while to get drink refills and she missed ordering one of our meals, but they didn't even want it after they tasted ours. I think if you want more of a sports bar feel then come here but not for food.... There are definitely better places to hit up if your on whyte.
We stopped by on the weekend since there was room on their patio and the weather was very nice. The décor of the restaurant is quite nice and they had a very nice bar area. This would be a great place for a few drinks after work. They had a nice variety of beers available and I tried the Pilsner 9 which was actually quite good. We also ordered their green tea and ginger mojito which is served in a mason jar. My husband quite liked it but I didn’t like the taste of tea so I wouldn’t get that personally. I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and he did the Peking duck sandwich. Both were good but nothing exceptional. The fries that come with it were also good but not great. The food came out slow but since we were chatting on the patio it was no problem for us. The waitress was friendly and quick to bring drinks so that was a plus. Overall I would say that this place isn’t particularly good for food but its definitely a great hang out place for drinks. Especially if the weather is nice and the patio is open. We would go back for drinks but maybe not for a lunch or dinner. If we did go back for food I would recommend trying their burgers since they did look pretty good and it’s hard to screw up a burger.
