I enjoy chatting with people while they cook and appreciate the experience of getting to know others while waiting in line for food. Food truck gatherings are my favorite spots, and I believe El Paso has some of the best food trucks I've encountered anywhere in the world. The vendors here combine the best aspects of the food truck scene with the distinct warmth and friendliness characteristic of El Paso and the Borderland region. It reminds me of outdoor markets I've visited in China, Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan, Peru, Thailand, and more. There’s a generous culture here; people take pride in their food and are eager to share it. Tonight, I found a vibrant market on the Westside, off Paseo Del Norte, in the Brake Master lot. Mr. Combi is a flautas truck that transformed a VW Bus and traveled all the way from Mexico City. His flautas—available with beef or potatoes—are super fresh, light, and crispy. The homemade sauces are truly impressive. I opted for the beef and potatoes combo ($8), which comes with a soda. He also has a version served in a cup, inspired by Chico's Tacos, called the Chuco ($4), topped with an incredible tomato-based sauce that is out of this world. I highly recommend this spot; it was bustling with people in line, even folks from Hawaii who were eager to enjoy a taste of El Paso. Next to Mr. Combi was an elotes truck, possibly called Elotes El Rey? The vendor's sons carried on their father’s tradition, serving delicious corn on the cob and esquites in a cup. I didn't get to try them this time but was shown one by another customer, and it looked amazing. Then there’s the bacon hot dog stand, where you can get a hot dog fully loaded with all the toppings, or as they say, “the whole enchilada.” The owners are from Sonora and incredibly friendly. It’s impressive how much they manage to pack into each creation. You can customize your hot dog to your taste. It’s quite different from a Dodger dog, but absolutely delicious. Priced at $8, it also comes with a soda and chips—such a great deal. These trucks are clearly neighborhood favorites, as families stop by after shopping at Walmart, despite the fast food options around. They truly represent homemade local cuisine well, and people flock to them. Plus, they stay open late and gather on Saturdays from 5 PM to midnight. If you're looking for awesome late-night food on the Westside, this is the place to be. Come out and support local businesses! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention—they offer catering services for events too. I had to return to try their Chuco-style flautas. They're simply addictive! They’ll be open until 11 PM tonight.
The service is fantastic! The owner of the food truck is incredibly friendly and clearly passionate about the menu. Unfortunately, they don't have chicken flautas, which I was really hoping to try, but I hope they’ll be added in the future. Fortunately, they do offer wings, and some of the flavors are quite unique, like tamarindo and Mr. Combi. We ordered lemon pepper tamarindo wings, and they were delicious! The owner was generous and even gave us two extra wings with the Mr. Combi sauce to sample for free. I’ll definitely be back for that tamarindo flavor!
The flautas are fantastic—crispy and flavorful!
