But not to freight, we can confirm that it's just as good! The inside is clean and looks newly updated. The menu has everything from appetizers, to salads, to the main event, barbecue! Our table started with the fried pickles and smokehouse pork fries. Our server let us know ahead of time that their fried pickles are a little peculiar instead of chips or spears, they're more like actual fries. But sooo good! The cheese fries were also a huge hit. We all got sandwiches of some sort either the South Carolina or North Carolina. The SC came with a mustard based sauce which had some tang to it. We also received extra on the side. The sides we got like the potato salad and hushpuppies were good, though we didn't care much for the coleslaw. Might be personal preference! All in all, a trip to Massanutten is not complete without a trip down the hill to the best barbecue place in the area!! Definitely worth a try!
Two of us enjoyed the tomato-based BBQ sandwich and one of us found the mustard-based BBQ to be very good (although in sharing a bit, not everyone liked the latter). The sandwich rolls got a bit soggy so two of us just ate the pulled pork inside. Very friendly service. The name of this establishment seems now to be The 1835 Smokehouse.
I was incredibly disappointed with just about everything about this establishment. I was hoping to get a taste of the local barbecuing scene, however was sorely let down. To begin, upon walking in we were not greeted, but instead the servers squabbled in front of us over who would have to take our table. As a server myself, this was appalling and extremely upsetting. My group of four, found our way over to a table and it took 10 minutes for our drink orders to be taken. We ordered two appetizer to start with, both of which were decent- with the fried pickles being the most satisfying thing I ate during the whole experience. The entrees were presented and my table was quiet. The BBQ nachos were something that could have been found ball game. The 20 dollar sampler platter was insultingly small. With all of meat being dry and semi-flavorless unless doused with BBQ sauce. Me and my spouse ordered the pork platter and it was about a cup of meat, a roll(obviously store bought), about 3 oz. of Mac and Cheese in a paper shot glass. And lastly, I was most excited for the apple sauce. Coming from the Carolinas, BBQ places generally serve warm in house made apple sauce. However, I was presented with a shot glass worth of mots apple sauce. As a fairly stoic fellow, this made me want to start crying. It was legitimately the only thing I was looking forward too. The food was generally flavorless, the meat was dry especially the ribs, which were poorly cut. And the side were lack luster. Not even in a funny way the shining star of this meal was a shot glass worth of potato salad. The bill came out to 60$, and it was nearly insulting to be presented with it. Of course it was paid in full and nothing was said to the servers other than the food was alright, thanks . Truthfully, I felt as though my money would have been better spent at McDonald 's. I usually do not leave reviews but I found the service, and food to be disturbing enough that it should be shared. atmosphere was alright.
Greeting my fellow Yelper 's! So ended up coming to this restaurant with members of my church and it turned out to be pretty good. The only hiccup some of us ran into was when our waiter brought us something entirely different from what we had originally ordered and did. It tell us. Therefore, I highly encourage everyone to advise the young waiters at this place to let their guest know ahead of time, what 's available to eat and what 's not? That way there is no confusion when ordering. Especially on the sampler platter. I was under the impression that it was supposed to serve 3 meats when in reality, it was only a total of two. Other than that the ribs and beef brisket was nicely smothered in a smoke finish. As I like to say, Not too shabby.
Consistently good. Keeps us coming back. This is our 4th time vacationing in the area, and our 4th time the family demanded we eat here. And you know what? The plasticware disposable plates makes you feel more at ease in this Covid crazy time we are living in. Just dang good BBQ here. And awesome icecream. Eat, enjoy, go. Great for takeout too.
