They use lots of scents in their cleaning and windows are left open all around the hotel which creates a damp environment that welcomes asthma triggers. The smell in the first room was so strong they moved me to a second but we discovered that was normal to have a strong smelling cleaner. Also my husband thinks they put a scented deoderizer on the carpet. The moved our rooms and the smell was a little better but I still had respiratory distress and I had no choice but to stay and pay for the room. I just took mad medicine and slept with the window open all night. All around, I don't think the stay was worth the money or four star. The carpet in the hotel was worn, there were issues with dirty caulking, musty cabinets, and generally worn and outdated interior. There was also a mattress in the back stairway just lounging about. There were cozy lounging areas and nice that everything was connected but in the states the interior would be indicitave of 2/3 star. The whole experience made me want to eat the money and stay at another hotel but I simple couldn't afford it. Stay at a 5 star next time.
On the outside this 4-star hotel looked very promising, the staff puts in their best effort. However, The Old Ground Hotel had its glory days behind it. The rooms are very outdated and worn out. The carpet in our room had blood stains and the paint was peeling of the window frames. It was hard to remove the plug from the sink so it didn't drain properly and the TV was mounted crookedly. Before arrival the staff turned the aircon down to a freezing 16 degrees celcius. The bathroom didn't have a toiletbrush and at the night the continuesly shining bright hallway lights seeped through the cracks between the door and the door frame. We hoped the breakfast would elevate our experience. Unfortunately it didn't... We both ordered the smoked salmon with scrambled eggs. The salmon clearly was out of the fridge for a long time. It was on room temperature and the edges were hard and had dried out. Looking down on the carpet we saw a lot snail trails as if the dining room hadn't been cleaned for a while. The staff also messed up with our luggage. The whole situation was quite embarrassing, at the moment they didn't handle it properly. Afterwards the manager resolved our complaint satisfactory via email, so won't go into details on what happened. All in all, it wasn't worth the money and we didn't experience a 4-star quality at all.
A lovely hotel elegantly appointed in the heart of the town. The food in the pub was excellent. The decor showed this American that she was indeed on the other side of the pond!
We just finished another lovely stay at the Old Ground. I would say it feels like home, but I’d be exaggerating since our own place isn’t nearly as nice. Beautiful room, friendly staff, great breakfasts and always love visiting the Poets Corner pub. Can’t wait to return, again.
Room was definitely not worth €235 per night. Room had a terrible smell, window faced noisy busy parking lot so not secure or conducive to opening to air it out. Bathroom quite small, door barely clears the toilet. Long hallways and steps to get to our room with tiny worthless double doors that make getting your luggage through a challenge. No easy access in with luggage. No parking available in their lot either. We didnt even stay the night, got checked in and left not long after. Building is cute on the outside
