Went here often for a triple cappuccino. They also have amazing granola bars to go along with. A great place to relax and enjoy the WiFi.
On my recent trip to Halifax I stopped in here twice. The first time was a random pop in. I was staying nearby at the Westin and saw this place as I started my walking tour of the city. The atmosphere was welcoming and I saw they had my favourite drink on the menu, London Fog. I grabbed a triple to go and enjoyed my delicious beverage as I strolled the streets of Halifax that chilly spring morning. The second time was on my way out of town. I arrived a few minutes before opening and they let me in early and served me. Great customer service! I will definitely be stopping in here on my next trip to Halifax.
It poured rain on and off as we walked around Halifax on a late May afternoon. Cold rain that sloshed up onto the cuffs and lower legs of our pants, and sluiced down onto my shoulder from my sloping umbrella, so that the wool of my tweed jacket had begun to release a distinctly sheepy smell the longer I walked. We needed a respite from the rain, and it was, in short, the kind of afternoon when you'd give anything for a cozy, quiet, unimposing little coffee shop to appear in front of you and rescue you from the weather. And that's just what happened: as we saw three women working in a nearby office step out of Uncommon Grounds with cups of coffee to take back to work, we knew that caffeine redemption might be at hand — if the coffee were good, and the coffee shop pleasant to sit in and hope that the rain might abate a bit as we sipped our coffee.Uncommon Grounds is the kind of place that invites such sitting. It's a discrete, small, dark little place with tattered old chairs (several of which are really beyond their prime and should be sent to pasture, but that's another story). And the coffee is very good: we shared a latte, which was perfectly made, smooth, dark, and rich — just what we needed on this cold late May afternoon.Among the pastry offerings, we spotted a plate of what were called seeded oatcakes under a glass dome, and asked for one. They were wonderful — slightly sweet oatcakes fashioned into the shape of a round scone or an American biscuit, with flax seeds mixed into a batter that appears to be made of ground oats with perhaps some wheat flour, buttermilk, and butter mixed into it. Or perhaps it's made solely with oat flour for those with wheat aversions. We both thought they were among the best pastries we've had in any coffee shop in a long time — far and away, head over heels, superior to the prefab tripe (aka "pastries") to be found in chain places like Starbucks. As we left, we thanked the barista-cum-cashier for making such a good latte and told him how much we had liked the oatcake. He smiled and said it was freshly baked daily at the other Uncommon Grounds in Halifax, apparently the parent store we'd happened on.And back into the pelting — but mercifully diminished — rain we trekked, happy we had seen and stopped in Uncommon Grounds.
I went to this place everyday I was in Halifax and I regret nothing! They have super good Nanaimo bars and fresh coffee!!
