Lynn who owns it came over and spoke to us and made us very welcome. They do food other than Pie and Mash so give McDowells a try and you will not be disappointed!!
The pie, mash, and liquor at this restaurant are excellent and reminiscent of the traditional East End pie and mash. I always make sure to stop by whenever I am in the Rotherham area.
There are two places in Romford where you can find pie and mash: Robins and McDowell's. I have had trouble trying to eat at McDowell's in the past because I always arrive late and they are closed. However, I was fortunate enough to catch them open one day, so I decided to give it a try even though I had already planned to go out for dinner. At first, I thought it would just be another pie and mash place, but I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portions and abundance of liquor. The liquor had a rich and flavorful taste, with hints of parsley that added a grassy freshness. The mashed potatoes were a bit lumpy, but adding salt and chili vinegar made them more enjoyable. Moving on to the pie, the minced beef filling was surprisingly tasty, with a salty and slightly savory flavor reminiscent of marmite. Unfortunately, there were some chewy bits in the beef that were a bit disappointing, but overall the consistency was good.
This place is hidden within the smaller shopping hall in Romford, our first time visiting and we were not disappointed, absolutely delicious pies the ones that are ever so slightly crispy. I shall most certainly be visiting again with my family and i highly recommend you do also.
The only traditional pie and mash so that I’ve been to that had more gravy in the pie than meat. So much gravy that it sorted out of the pie when I put the knife in. Was ok. Wouldn’t rush back
