Pengethley Manor

A birthday treat which turned into a great disappointment! Here is our list of complaints: 1. Poor quality finger sandwiches with the crust still attached under the bread and some of which were stale 2. Cakes not homemade and from frozen 3. Tea should be in bone china cups and matching teapot not clunky china 4. Waitress in the dirtiest dress 5. Big forks for eating cakes If you book a special afternoon tea you expect it to be special and imaginative. For £30 it was a huge disappointment. Not even fresh flowers on the table. It was all very casual as though they weren’t expecting us and couldn’t be bothered to make an impression. Don’t waste your money.

We stayed here for a couple of nights recently. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds near Ross on Wye. The buildings look impressive from the outside. They have some quirky rooms in on old trucks. We stayed in one in the eaves as we booked it a little late. The room was large and light and clean. But... there is no shower other than the shower head in the bath which is in the room. So use the shower normally and the carpet gets wet! The toilet and the sink are in a small room . I 'm 5ft 11 and I couldn 't stand up. There was no phone , so you have to ring the main reception and they took ages to answer the phone. When I asked why there is no phone in the room I was told the owners don 't want any phones! The receptionist greeted us with an Awright? Not very professional. The staff didn 't seem that happy or enthusiastic and certainly not well trained. Breakfast was ok. The pool was outdoor as was the sauna. We didn 't use them because the weather was poor. It had a slight Fawlty Towers feeling about the place as some of the staff needed help from colleagues etc. The catering bottle of Lea and Perrins dumped on the table at breakfast was a highlight. We wouldn 't recommend it to friends.

Lovely family run hotel. great location, offers afternoon tea and evening meal. staff very helpful. Showed us walks we can go on. pool outside heated but not very hot.

Lovely place to stay, rooms very large and clean, staff very welcoming and helpful,breakfast excellent, the only thing that let it down was the evening meal , duck was over cooked and salmon mousse had no tasty, would recommend to stay

Visited the establishment on 4-7 March for my birthday with my boyfriend. We stayed in a quirky converted Bedford Horsebox. Just the right size for a couple and bunk beds were also available for children. Only 3.5 miles outside Ross-On-Wye which was perfect for us. Manor House was spectacular with a cosy lounge for residents to relax in. Snooker room and games room available. Restaurant was roomy with spectacular views of the rural countryside. Had afternoon tea on arrival which was amazing and well recommended! Bar prices were reasonable. Used the sauna a few times on our visit. Hot tub and gym is also available to residents. Outside pool for in the summer months. The grounds were well kept. Dale made us very welcome on arrival and was very knowledgeable on the surrounding area and places to visit. Could not do enough for us. Sam the chef made me an amazing birthday cake. If you are looking for a relaxing break in the countryside with plenty to do nearby this is a perfect location. Had an amazing walk around Pengethley, the Manor House grounds and adjacent fields on my birthday in the sun. Little gem tucked away from the main road. Nearest pub is 3/4 of a mile away on a footpath on a busy road. We walked there and caught the bus into Ross on Wye for the evening. Be prepared to wait 45-60 minutes for a taxi due to being in a rural location! Breakfast was amazing and grilled not fried. I am vegetarian and the sausages served at breakfast were best l had ever tasted. Great selection and even served Pancakes for my birthday breakfast on Shrove Tuesday! Looking forward to visiting this establishment again in the near future. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Other guests were friendly too on our visit.
