Got a happy hour mai tai. The 1944 mai tai is probably the best on the Big Island and the zombie-served in a huge glass with corresponding tiki garnish-absolut lives up to its name. Supposed, but so are most places, and our server was fast and friendly. Great view, classic decor and drinks, this place overhauled. Surprisingly cheap food prices.
Service is excellent. 2 of the servers were old ladies and probably worked there since the beginning of this hotel in the 1970s. A lady spoke English with a heavy Japanese accent. Price was very reasonable, fruit stamp 4$, and they even be careful on a cherry and little umbrella for each cup.
We didn't think the food would live by the sea until the magnificent view, but we were wrong with the boy. All our dishes were fantastic! We tried the big sushi plate, fish tacos, shrimp salad, giant calamari and sweet potatoes. Absolutely delicious!! BTW Mai Tais and drinks were bomb!
Relaxed, casual waterfront dining. Food and service was great. Our waitress, Jessica, was wonderful and took good care of us. We had Calamari Fritte, Tiger Eye Sushi (Ahi) Tempura Roll, and Seafood Corn Chowder with a Mai Tai Taster. The calamari is thick slices of calamari steak and not rings. Lightly breaded and tender, we really enjoyed it. The tempura sushi roll has a fairly small amount of ahi, but the favors were well balanced and it tasted great. The chowder is thick and chunky and not overly fishy tasting. We would get it again. We ended our meal with the Royal Mud Pie. Awesome and plenty to share for two people. The location was prefect to watch the beautiful sunset in Kailua-Kona. We highly recommend eating at Don the Beachcomber.
