Restaurants in Konya offer great opportunities to practice language skills. The city attracts many tourists and pilgrims, but it seems that most do not speak English, as the hotel and restaurant staff do not appear to speak it. I found a charming restaurant located on the corner of busy Mevlana street and market street that serves local dishes. No one spoke English, which added to the fun of the experience. We ordered chicken shish kebap, Tirit (a local specialty), a side salad, and a unique drink called Shalgam, which is made from turnips. While the drink may take some getting used to, the food was fresh, delicious, and affordable. We ended our meal with a dessert from the display near the cash register.
