I had the best meal I've ever had in Tunis at this restaurant. I ordered the fennel couscous with vegetables, chickpeas, and beans. The portions were very generous and everything was absolutely delicious. I didn't get to try the vegetarian "meatballs" (made with egg) but I didn't miss them at all. The owner, Gerard, was very welcoming and the service was quick.
This restaurant is fantastic! You can customize your own plate and the staff is friendly and helpful. There are plenty of vegan options available. The kitchen staff is very tidy. I would give the owner a hug. This restaurant is a hidden gem!
Located in a quiet street in La Marsa, The Couscous Tree (L'Arbre à Couscous) offers a unique vegan twist on the traditional North African dish. The restaurant is small, with seating for about twenty-four people, and is clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. During two visits, including one on a Saturday, we had no trouble getting a table right away as it was popular but not overly crowded. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the hostess and shown to a buffet table at the back of the restaurant where she explained the menu and invited us to help ourselves. Despite our limited knowledge of French/Arabic, we were easily able to identify the vegan dishes on offer. The buffet included various types of couscous, such as spinach, whole wheat, and the traditional "harisa," all made without animal products. The best toppings for vegans were mixed stewed vegetables (potato, carrot, celery, squash, and zucchini), beans (garbanzo and fava), and a choice of mild or spicy sauces. Don't miss the vegan spinach boulettes, they are delicious! We were also served three small side salads to share: thinly sliced radish, lemon peel, and diced cucumber/tomato. Soft pop music played in the background as we enjoyed our meal. The owner checked on us during our meal and the staff were all very friendly. For dessert, we had mint tea and traditional date cookies (possibly made with honey). The prices were moderate by local standards and affordable compared to American/European prices. In a location where vegan options are scarce, dining at L'Arbre à Couscous is a delightful experience.
