These are European style, savoury dumplings; you can choose between mushroom, potato, or a mixture of both (my personal favourite), topped off with the all important sour cream. These dumplings need to be tasted to be believed, but not for the faint hearted if you prefer light meals.<br/ <br/ One thing I can't pass over is the complementary bread before the main meal. While often this might be heavy, rye style bread, it is outstanding. Served simply with some butter, the danger is that you'll eat it all and fill up before your main!<br/ <br/ I also need to give a shout out to the cake selection. There are usually several cakes of rotating flavours which, when accompanied by high quality Melbourne coffee and fresh whipped cream, literally go down a treat.<br/ <br/ This place is actually tiny you'll feel like a nineteenth century gold minor scrambling to get your hands the last known mining licenses so you do feel like you're tripping over one another. That said, it just adds to the atmosphere and the perception of scarcity for the produce.
We had a very nice brunch here awhile ago. The food was delicious and the service was fast and friendly.
Amazing tarts, really delicious. Their tart's crust is crispy and light, at a perfect thickness. The ratio of filling to pastry is also well balanced. Absolutely loved it will definitely come back to try all their different baked goods!
As a lover of all things pastry and cake, Babka bakery in Fitzroy is heaven. The fit out of the cafe itself is fairly standard. It's cosy, and can get a little crowded, but you come here for the food, not the atmosphere. The staff are lovely and more than helpful when it comes to suggestions from the menu. Although they do have menu items, we come for the cake, because they are a sweet tooths dream.<br/ <br/ The lemon tart is a classic, with all the zinginess and creaminess you would want, in a perfectly short pastry case. The bruleed top adds some toffee like texture, and this really is a winner.<br/ <br/ The signature chocolate babka is so good. With a brioche base layered with heaps of chocolate, this pretty, swirly pastry really is divine. Crunchy on the outside and smooth, fluffy and buttery on the inside, and really, who can say no to chocolate.<br/ <br/ We love Babka bakery as the perfect spot for a great cup of coffee with a sweet treat or two, and it's clear by it's popularity that the locals love it too.
BEST ALMOND CROISSANTS! Haven’t dined in or had anything else but we will definitely be returning for the almond croissants. It is a very very small cafe so no prams allowed. Best to get take away.
