Old style traditional village pub. No fancy frills Good ales on tap. A pool table. A beer garden Meals and pub snacks available. Not a gastro pub but a good place for a snack lunch. By the Roman Walls
Last minute decision to eat out paid off, lovely well cooked lunch with fresh vegetables and not an auntie bessies in sight home made Yorkshire pudding, tasty gravy and lovely home made desserts. A tad rowdy with children as the restaurant is quite small...and it's a family pub. A good home cooked meal at a reasonable price, very enjoyable.
We came here as we were visiting the frankly fantastic winter's end rock festival and needed to stay nearby. Our first impressions were not great as the room had a few issues that we felt should have been dealt with, for example we had a...window that would not close, this rendered the room cold. Also there was no shower gel ..... Not crime of the century but you expect certain things to be present. As the inn is a listed building we appreciated that certain issues were likely to arise however the response to our issues was swift and effective. The room itself was a good size with a phenomenally comfortable bed and despite being above an inn we had three fantastic nights sleep. The main reason we score this place so highly is the manager who did absolutely everything in his power to help us out. When we reported the broken window he arranged a carpenter to come and fix it and gave us a drink in the bar for our trouble. When the cleaner left a key in our door lock meaning all our belongings were vulnerable he again tried to make amends. Our breakfasts were delicious and we were very happy with the response to all our issues. The inn is comfortable, well situated and remarkably quiet in comparison with the other inns at the bottom of town so we were able to have the best of both worlds, access to facilities as well as privacy and quiet when needed. We will be returning to this festival in the future and will definitely try to stay here again.
It is always nice to visit this pub you are always made most welcome and in the five years I have been dining there I have never yet had a bad meal. Tonight myself and two friends ordered the beer battered Cod and Chips the...plate was absolutely full and the meal itself was absolutely delicious. They also have an out of doors kids play garden for the warmers months. All in all a fantastic family pub
