I wanted to try this restaurant out for breakfast with my two young daughters. I read the reviews and the history about this place and was excited and hopeful. We walked in to a gloomy, depressing atmosphere. only a handful of people at 11 a.m. Didn't give it to much thought. The waitress (older lady) took our order, asking us multiple times our orders. Still didn't give it to much thought. She brought two platters and had to ask again who ordered what. My oldest daughter (13 yrs) got yelled at by this waitress to answer the question. We sat there in shock. We had a very hard time understanding all of her mumbling. The food was worse than the service. Burnt french toast (three orders), runny eggs(asked for fried, well done), and undercooked sausage( that could have made us sick. I offered to pay for what we had tried to eat and the manager was kind and understanding to not charge for anything. Sounds like this place is only surviving off the fried chicken.
This place is located just down from Kopper Kettle. Like KK it's main staple is chicken. And I must say it is delicious! While KK pan fries their chicken, Bluebird broils theirs. The restaurant is family owned with the owner and son visible. Saturday and Sunday evenings they offer and buffet. Sunday is $1 more, but unlimited dessert is included and they have homemade pies. All other times, you can order from the menu. They offer breakfast as well. Doors open at 6:30a and the locals are usually waiting for it to open. I went in for the Saturday buffet and I was not too impressed with with selection. They had a salad bar and a hot bar. The hot bar had fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, some kind of slaw, limabeans, corn and rolls. Not a huge selection for a buffet. The only thing I liked was the fried chicken. I will say that our server was super friendly and nice. We chatted with her a few times and learned about the restaurant since it was our first visit.
First visit to Bluebird Restaurant on Sunday after church. So many people have recommended it for their fried chicken and wasn 't really sure what to expect. They have a buffet for $12.99 per person which isn 't a bad price when the buffet includes fried chicken, fried shrimp and pork roast. I made my first pass through the buffet just focusing on the main items and got fried chicken, fried large popcorn style shrimp, corn and green beans. Nothing was hot and corn and green beans were on the cold side of room temperature. It wasn 't appetizing but I ate it because I hate to be wasteful. I made a second pass at the salad bar and lettuce wS room temperature and wilted. Nice selection of items to add to your salad or top it. I went for what looked like a possible homemade blue cheese dressing but very vinegary! I didn 't enjoy the warm and wilted salad but ate it because I hate being wasteful. I went back for another piece of chicken since my first pass was two chicken wings but my chicken breast that appeared to be fresh out of the fryer had an off taste. I wasn 't sure but I swear the chicken was fried in oil that something fishy had been fried in. As much as I didn 't want to be wasteful, I just couldn 't eat it. I then went to the dessert table. Quite honestly, the only thing I really wanted was now just an empty plate with crumbs and I asked if they would bring out another German chocolate cake with coconut pecan frosting. They said they 'd bring out another chocolate cake but not the same kind. I was a bit disappointed but went for blackberry pie and red velvet cake. They were both disappointing. The red velvet was dry and the pie crust was sandy and dry. I just quit then and we paid and left. I don 't think I would go back. It was not cheap for Sunday lunch when everything is just meh . They might have been too busy to adequately provide hot, tasty food but I don 't want to spend another $13.00 per person to find out for sure.
Went here on Sunday afternoon and it was delicious! Everyone was super friendly. Definitely a good place for after church lunch. We had the buffet and it didn't have a huge selection but what they had on it was delicious. I highly recommend the fried chicken. I'm not sure how it's cooked but I'm pretty sure it's done in a pressure cooker of some sort. I do not think it's fried in an actual fryer. It's perfectly crispy and it's not dry at all! I pretty much ate chicken for my lunch and nothing else. It was that good!!
