Bartenders are creative and friendly. Cool location across from Yale University. If you’re in New Haven and you like history mixed with drinks, you’ve got to check it out!
Husband and I made a point to go to this bar when we first moved to CT, since it was listed in the book “Where Bartenders Drink”. A beautifully historic, intimate place to get an amazing cocktail. We’ve been twice now. Definitely recommend getting a reservation in advance. They will also make custom cocktails if asked- which is always a great experience. EXCEPT, be cautious. They will ask you if you have any drink preferences and if you ask for anything similar in taste to a Long Island (I know, my husband was cracking up) you WILL get roasted. That’s too low class of a drink unfortunately haha. I don’t know if I can show my face there again!
Quite neat place to check whether they are looking for a crafty cocktail. this would be a great place for date night. the ambiente is quiet, relaxing and intimate. Drinks are on the expensive side, but again they pay for this ambiente. I ordered a French 75 (not in the menu), but they did an excellent one. only planned to get one, but decided to stay for another round because we liked it so much.
It is refreshing to be in a bar that stands out from the mediocrity that is common in modern irrigation holes. I appreciated the variety in the drinks menu and although I'm usually a biertrinker, I enjoyed the magic high ball cocktail on the menu. it was a well-designed drink that had the right balance of complexity and healthy human understanding. I was a guest at a job meeting and had the opportunity to try a lot of or bar bits. the food was as carefully prepared as the drinks and the service was for both surpassed my expectations. the atmosphere was one of my favorite functions of the venue, reminded me of the owl bar in baltimore that I am nostalgic. the gips blanket and walnut wood cladding ooze character despite its understatement. the dimm illumination and thoughtful accents strengthen the atmosphere and serve as comfortable conversation pieces, in particular the filled elche. When they visit new haven, they put this place on their short lists and they will not regret it.
We popped in here for a few drinks after dinner. The atmosphere is amazing, you have to ring a doorbell and then be let in! A good range of cocktails and spirits available. All of the staff were really attentive, especially the manager who gave us a list of other bars and restaurants we should visit while in New Haven. If we lived in New Haven, this Ordinary would definitely be our local
