El Criollo - Newark

This is a fantastic restaurant! A friend recommended it, claiming it's the best spot in North Newark. Since we had a 5-hour layover just 10 minutes from Newark Liberty Airport, we decided to give it a try. What an experience! The food was excellent—true Latin cuisine, which is not at all Mexican. It featured a fusion of Puerto Rican dishes and Peruvian seafood. We were a group of five, enjoyed a few Coronas each, and had a full meal for under $40. Unbelievable! The lively music made our visit even more enjoyable, setting a perfect tone before our long flight home.

The menu is exceptional, and the food is consistently delightful. The owner is charming and ensures that your experience is memorable. The chef is extraordinary—everything is fresh every single time!

This is my favorite Colombian restaurant in Morris County. Not only is it BYOB, but Los Criollos also serves the best breaded Bassa fish filet dinner around. My pictures really speak for themselves. Our entire family loves this place! Each meal includes rice and a delicious tomato salad, which is more than enough for almost two people. My sister and I also believe they have the tastiest beans around. We do wish there was a bit more bean volume and a bit less sauce, but they are so delicious that we always get two orders to pair with our rice. Plus, you get four generous pieces of plantains. My sister tried the Shrimp Filet soup special, which came in a flavorful fish curry broth and was packed with shrimp and chunks of fish. We never finish all the food and always leave with leftovers. The coffee here is excellent as well. The interior is clean and casual, with two TVs. It’s truly a gem of a restaurant in Wharton!
