This is one of the best places for home-cooked meals that I have ever encountered. I have dined here before and highly recommend visiting. While the restaurant and atmosphere may not be impressive, the food speaks for itself. The family-owned establishment has been around for a long time, and I urge you to try their fried chicken and cornbread, which are some of the best I've ever tasted.
Charleston is known for its rich history, beautiful scenery, and incredible dining options. As a relative newcomer to soul food, I was eager to visit Bertha's Kitchen during my last trip to Charleston. This renowned restaurant, founded and predominantly operated by black women, serves up a mouthwatering "meat and three" experience that has received recognition from the Beard Foundation. The fried chicken had a perfectly crispy skin and juicy meat, while the okra soup was surprisingly delicious, even for someone who typically doesn't enjoy okra. The crispy and flavorful fried shrimp was another standout dish that left me wanting more. Overall, Bertha's Kitchen exceeded my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed every bite. I highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to experience authentic southern cuisine.
One of my favorite restaurants in charleston. great service and phenomenal eating. everything is absolutely delicious. authentic seafood and some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. must try.
If you like soul food and low country cuisine, Bertha’s is where it’s at. There will probably be a line, and it is located further north on the peninsula away from the tourist areas. That said the food at Bertha’s is phenomenal, you can’t go wrong with the fried chicken, fish, Mac n cheese, red rice, and much more. I’ve never seen a menu posted, but the staff was very friendly and happy to explain the menu to guests. Currently there are no tables inside but there is a covered outdoor seating area with a handful of tables. It’s no surprise this restaurant has been around so long, and with food quality like this, I expect it to remain so for decades to come! Make sure to come hungry as well.
