I was brought in with the promise from another review of the best buffalo chicken sandwich (The Hot Mess) in the Western starts, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance is very roadside, but in a nice way. The team at the restaurant was welcoming and worked hard to produce a great meal. Great Place!!!
The Big Kahuna with pineapple was pretty good. The mash potatoes and gravy were a bit too salty for me. I liked the tots nice and crispy. The onion rings were excellently cooked, but served a bit too cold. Overall it was all 'good ' but not 'great '.
I drove past and decided to make a quick stop, which turned out to be the best decision I could have made. The owner warmly greeted me with a friendly "hello" and asked if I had visited before. It was my first time. She guided me through the menu to help me familiarize myself and was extremely helpful. I usually think that chicken is just chicken, but the chicken I had here was exceptional. It was crispy on the outside, tender and not dry on the inside. The flavors were abundant, vibrant, and danced on my tastebuds. My mind was thoroughly impressed. I ordered a quarter chicken with the sweet dry rub. I highly recommend this place on El Camino for their excellent quality and service. Thank you, Fowl Play, for providing me with the best service and lunch experience.
This restaurant recently opened just a few days ago. While some of the staff may not know their jobs very well yet, they have a great attitude and the food is quite good. It's definitely worth a try during non-peak hours.
After my first visit, I have a few thoughts. I am a self-proclaimed 'spud snob' due to my love of homemade fried chicken with mashed potatoes and pan gravy. I believe that adding more butter, cream or milk to the smashed potatoes would greatly enhance their creaminess. I appreciate that they keep the skin on the potatoes and include chunks of potato. It would be nice if they offered a country/cream gravy option in addition to the brown gravy. Overall, the food was delicious and the service was excellent. I recommend trying the Hot Mess dish - you won't be disappointed. I will definitely return.
