Northern Palace - Prince George

I live near this restaurant, have been there quite a few times, and have had food delivered quite a few times. I am also very familiar with authentic Chinese food. This is a very good restaurant, but it is important to recognize that it is a Canadian-Chinese restaurant, not a Chinese restaurant. It does not aim at providing authentic Szechuan food or Hunan food or any other kind of Chinese food. Rather, it serves the distinctive variety of Chinese food that has evolved in Canada. As a result, some familiar Chinese dishes are not quite as they are in China or in restaurants abroad that aim at authenticiity. The hot and sour soup, for example, is good but not in my opinion as spicy or sour as it should be. The same is true of the Ma Po Do Fu. Where it really shines is in the Canadian-Chinese dishes. The Ginger Beef, for example, is terrific, juicy with lots of ginger. The Fu Yong dishes and Lemon Chicken are very good. One dish that is actually rather authentic is the Spicy Salt Squid, which is excellent. The menu includes a small Western section and the usual North American-Cantonese entries and combination plates for those not interested in the more interesting dishes. If you are ordering food for delivery, my experience is that the food generally comes sooner than they predict.

The service was average, but the food wasn't that great. It didn't look unappetizing but the almond chicken and chicken chow mein was VERY salty. The whole meal wasn't very hot and the sweet and sour pork was just warm. This was our second visit. We went last year. Although not impressed, we didn't feel a need to write a review. This time we definately felt there was a need. Without changes, we won't be going back.

Overall an excellent Chinese restaurant. We really like the dry garlic chicken wings. Whether you eat in or take out this restaurant never disappoints.

Very nice place, almost unexpected for the area of town. Clean, big menu, good Chinese cuisine that doesn't leave you feeling bad afterwards. Western cuisine options for the kiddos and good service. Will come back.
