I like food, there's no denying that. And I find even more immense pleasure when I stumble upon places that's inspired by, or is in one way or another referencing films. That's why I was thrilled when the next Zomato foodie meet-up I was invited to was in Me Love You Long Time in Tomas Morato. We were told that the resto was started by a group of people from the UP Cineastes, which was originally meant to be their tambayan that soon progressed into a full-blown restaurant. Naturally, the name of the place was something related to a film, and that film is Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket. Let me just point out how colorful and inviting the presentation of the dishes are! To start, I really enjoyed eating the Fresh Spring Rolls, the taste always remind me of summer. On a normal instance, I'm not big on the greens but this is an exception. It's always a good starter to Thai meals. The vegetables are crisp, the cilantro is a burst of citrus-y, minty in your mouth, which is perfectly complemented by the peanut sauce. Next is the Thai Tom Yum. I liked the balance of the heat and the sourness of this soup. Definitely didn't scrimp on ingredients since there were plenty of shrimp and tofu in it. The coconut milk rounds all the flavors up in one beautiful bowl of goodness. My top choices are the Bagoong Rice with Pork Belly and Canh Ga Chien Mam! Actually, I loved the pork belly but not so much on the bagoong rice. I felt like the overall dish tasted salty. But that meat was just super delicious -- tender and extremely flavorful! Now when I paired it with the Thai Basil Fried Rice with Shrimp, it was sort of a light bulb moment. Somehow it worked for me better because the flavors are more harmonious. Not salty sweet plus salty anymore. I liked the combo of the two! The other foodies that night found the Canh Ga Chien Mam (or just Vietnamese spicy chicken wings) too hot to handle, but for me, it was perfect. I really have no idea yet how an authentic one is supposed to taste but I loved it. It was juicy and the skin in crispy and the spiciness was tolerable for me. Give me more! ♥‿♥ The Chicken Satay is also another favorite. The meat skewer is grilled, giving it this nice a little burnt on the edges color, accompanied by a peanut sauce. There were satisfying flavors with every bite because of the combination of the taste of the meat and the creaminess and nuttiness of the sauce. For dessert, as much as the Sticky Rice with Mango was good, I fell head over heels in love with the Turon ala mode because of the addictive Basil ice cream on top. I'm a sweet tooth through and through and that ice cream definitely hit the right spots. It was excellent! I was so ready to take a tub of that perfection home but unfortunately, they haven't packaged the ice cream (yet, hopefully) for take outs. leftoverjinx.com

The line: "Me love you long time" came from Stanley Kubrick's iconic film called Full Metal Jacket, which was released in the 90's. This film was what the owners of the restaurant of its namesake had in mind when they started the venture. The interiors feature a makeshift downtown cafe akin to the ones found in Ho Chi Minh, complete with the street signs and all. The restaurant began in a food park, then moved to a secluded spot in Tomas Morato. ...Read full post on thedigester.blogspot.com
Combine affordable and delicious in a menu and it would go a long way. Me Love You Long Time, a quaint restaurant tucked away in POS Building in Tomas Morato, offers both in plates of various Southeast Asian dishes. The choices are immense, there’s a dish for everyone. They have dishes from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and even our own, Philippines. My favorites from the bunch are the following: Fresh Spring Rolls – True to their word, this was served fresh and inviting and blended perfectly well with the sauce. I wanted to finish the entire plate. Vietnamese Spicy Chicken Wings – I love chicken and everything spicy so this was a no-brainer favorite. If you love spicy food, too, you’d take delight in this. Thai Basil Fried Rice – Basil can be too strong if done wrong but this had just the right amount of basil to be yummy. Will definitely order this again when I come back. Satay – Small bits of chicken in a stick dipped in peanut sauce = perfection. Malaysian Curry Laksa – I enjoyed this mainly because I’m a curry fan but being into spicy food, I thought it should have a tad bit more curry in it. I liked these other dishes that I tried too, but I thought they would be ten times better if tweaked a little: Pad Thai – I miss Thai food terribly so I was really looking forward to tasting it again. MLYLT’s version is far from authentic and had a little too much sauce mixed with everything else. If they separated some of the ingredients and gave the diner the liberty to mix the ingredients however way they like, this would be a 10. Bagoong Rice with Pork Belly – I thought this dish looked really good when served so I was disappointed at how salty it was. Very easily fixable. Sticky Rice with Mango – Same with their Pad Thai, I thought this was a little overdone. I felt that the sticky rice should have a drier texture and maybe add more mangoes to the serving size. Overall, Me Love You Long Time is a great place to take your friends to. It’s intimate and if you have about 15 people, you can take over their indoor dining area. You won’t run out of choices and because they have generous servings, you can share and have a taste of everything. Bonus: Please, please order their Turon ala Mode and Homemade Basil Ice Cream. These are guaranteed to make your day.
