On the other hand: The staff was very good in spite of being very busy You don 't need to be crazy to work here, we will train you The menus look like newspapers and contain interesting facts and suggested places to go The coffee was excellent and could be bought to take home with you! The décor was really engaging and for sale! The coffee mugs were both very attractive and comfortable to use and for sale! Sense a theme yet? Taken all together, this place is more than the sum of its parts and if it had more vegan options, we would boost our rating to a 5 star.
It's super cute inside and the coffee is very good. I got the vegan frittata. They were out of Tofurkey so I had them add veggies. It was not the best vegan breakfast I've had (coming from the Detroit area) but its the best one for many miles which is good enough for me! I enjoyed my breakfast of no cheese, no egg, little oil veggie frittata and coffee.
I didn’t try to eat here, especially based on other reviews. I just planned on getting coffee on my way through town. At 10 am on a Thursday it was a madhouse. The dine in area and patio were packed and people were waiting in the parking lot for a table. I went in to order coffee to go and the people behind the counter acted like they didn’t know what to do with all these customers, shouting orders back and forth, confused about tables, you name it. I ordered an iced latte and I’m not sure what I got, but it wasn’t an iced latte. It tasted more like they filled the cup halfway with espresso that had been made that morning and refrigerated, then topped with milk. It was very strong, which I didn’t have a problem with, but as a coffee snob it wasn’t an iced latte. It felt like a madhouse in there and the coffee was only adequate, so be warned. I wouldn’t stop again.
Java Joes is not a vegan restaurant but they do have a large selection of menu items that are vegetarian. The only thing on the menu that is vegan friendly is the fruit bowl (minus the sweet bread) and plain toast. The staff stated they could make something special up for me but I choose to just eat fruit when we visited. I would LOVE to see this establishment make a couple of subtle changes to include a few options for vegans. It would not be difficult to remove the honey from the homemade granola and substitute maple syrup, or agave. The coffee was great though and the atmosphere was fun and funky. I cannot say enough good things about all who worked there. We will go back again, but I will need to eat something beforehand. I would give a higher star amount if they offered a few vegan dishes.
