Move on four years, allowed to travel again, back on another great wine tour with Valentina, and we said 'let 's go back to Boulangerie sous Tilleuls '. It did not disappoint. The tarts (tomato and olive, onion and anchovies, quiche Lorraine, zucchini and lardon, and more) were again gorgeous. But then we discovered the sacristain...a skinny French pastry roll with honey and almonds. Wow! It was crunchy and way too delicious. Since then we 've tried a couple of very pale imitations which only underscored our original impression. If these are not the world 's best sacristains, I 'd love to know what is. Faults? None really. This place doesn 't pretend to be anything but a little village bakery with some folding tables and chairs under the trees. But it would be nice if the waiter could raise a smile from time to time!
Here are the facts: we reserved, arrived on time and were told to choose between two tables. So we chose one and sat down and waited. And waited. We watched other people arrive and sit down at three other tables. These fortunate customers were shown the menu board, got served drinks and then had their orders taken. In the meantime we sat and waited, totally ignored by the waitress. We tried to attract her attention, to no avail. In the end we called out to her and she snapped that she was busy. I went up to her and explained that we had arrived before the other tables and she screamed at me that she was a person and how dare we call out to her...??? Naturally at that point we left. Turns out we had the right idea over breakfast at the guest house we learnt that on top of the rudeness, the food is bad and way overpriced. Spare yourselves a very unpleasant experience.
I have been going to this bakery for years and even if they are not always friendly, their bread is usually good (except when they sell the dry bread baked the day before, which happened to me). What happened to me today is surreal, I ask for a baguette and the saleswoman answers me that there are none left, so I ask for explanations on the other breads and then the boss comes and tells me « arrêtez de nous emmerder, tous les pains sont les mêmes (stop bothering us, all the breads are the same) » and he left. At the same time, a waitress walks past me and tells me that she has priority while I was busy with the saleswoman (they are doing a little restoration on the terrace in front of the bakery). I was really shocked and what is certain is that I will never go back there again.
La Boulangerie was recommended to us by a local foodie, and her suggestion was spot-on. We had a great meal at La Boulangerie. The food was very tasty, the view and location fantastic and the service (despite our terrible French) very helpful and gracious. We would not hesitate to return.
The service at Boulangerie des Tilleuls is disgraceful. I perservered over the last few years, but gave up this summer after being rudely treated so drove to Mollans for breakfast and to buy bread each morning instead.
