As he was not vegan he kept asking us to taste his creations. Best vegan cheese I have tasted and The tiramisu is a must order
Dog-friendly restaurant with delicious food and nice atmosphere!
A non-vegan friend suggested this place to me as it is a ten minute walk from where we live. If you are travelling by metro it's on Line 1, either Xujahui exit 1 or Shanghai Indoor Stadium exit 8. The building is on street level with a big sign in English, there are some outdoor seats with more indoor upstairs, it also sells plants. I was skeptical until I saw the menu, the head waiter seemed a little unsure at first but then assured us that the menu is purely plant based including the cheese and meats. We went for lunch with our friends, they had the Caprese salad with vegan mozzarella, it looked so fresh, and the avocado omelette on toast, they use Just Egg. We all had the polenta skewers with home made peanut satay which were crisp and delcious. I had the mini smoky burgers which there were 3 of, the flavours, texture was fantastic. My girlfriend had the Pad Thai, so great. I feel like this place has really given something new to the vegan scene in Shanghai and it could be too bad for me as it's so close to home! I'm looking to revisit this weekend with fellow vegans and non-vegans, I will update afterwards. So just back from my third visit in 7 days, this place is great going to be very popular with vegans in Shanghai. The burger is delicious, great tasty crisp patty, fresh ingredients dressed the bun, comes with a simple kale tomato side salad home made crisps. We tried a little of the pumpkin mooncake, like a spring roll, also good. Our vegan non-vegan friends enjoyed too. My friend tried the creme brulee, it was ok but chocolate not really like a traditional one. The manager James is extremely friendly immediately put the Happy Cow excellent reviews sticker on the door. After the initial excitement of this place opening and having been more than half a dozen times, I'm seeing it in a slightly different light. It feels like it's not quite matching it's claims on certain dishes, for example the black rice risotto which was not like a risotto but more like black rice with some mushroom garlic sauce on top, the pumpkin mooncakes could've done with a hint of spice like cinnamon or nutmeg otherwise they're just hot fried things that need the dipping sauce to add flavour. The burger is very good messy but in my opinion the big wedge of mango doesn't add anything except to making it more awkward to eat, I'd prefer they kept it simple, lettuce, onion, tomato pickle. This is my first restaurant that I found through happycow. I had a choice go again to my beloved Green Vege or try something new. I tried something new, Green Friday, and, when leaving, I felt disappointed. In general the food was alright, though I don 't have the same cravings for it as for Green Vege 's food. The interior is great! But when I saw the flower shop, the design, the second floor, etc my mind immediately went uh oh the menu will be pricey , which it was (more pricey than Green Vege 's). There were three issues that made me feel uncomfortable which, I guess, are at no fault of the restaurant. 1. The staff by the door didn 't know what vegan is. 2. There was one hair in my food (not a great first impression), but I 'm not picky, I just removed it myself without saying anything. Strangely the waiter saw me doing that and also said nothing (I guess he dropped it when he was bringing the plate. 3. I 'm used to getting stared at everywhere (I 'm easy on the eyes), but it 's annoying when I try to eat and the waiter keeps staring at me from afar. Losing appetite this way very quickly ...
We really enjoyed Green Friday. Great food selection, fantastic presentation, and beautiful environment. The mini smoked burgers and mooncakes were great. The crème brûlée was divine. A couple of the dishes were good, but not fantastic for the price, I expected a little bit more in terms of flavors. Still, I'd be happy to return.
