Slaton Steak House

We stopped here a couple of summers ago on a Sunday morning when dining options were limited. We were asking the waitress what we could get that didn't have milk since my wife and daughter had allergy restrictions. The cook offered to hand-bread a chicken fried steak for them using only flour (normally it had milk in the batter). Not only was their gesture very considerate, the food was excellent!

Like a cafeteria. Decent food, for $10 you get Steak, Bake, and Salad. The stuff with Mayo (potato salad, macaroni salad, pea salad) was all dry on top of the over-filled cool trays on the bar. It had clearly been sitting out there without rotation or fresh batches being made. It was cold, but you had to dig to the bottom to make sure you didn't get old crusty mayo.There were flies too and the whole restaurant was empty and un decorated. It looked like an old gas station at one point.OVERALL: No atmosphere, but good hot steak, salad, and Bake for $10? Excellent.

I visited this restaurant around 1:00 PM on a Thursday. I received a warm welcome as soon as I walked in and was seated in a secondary dining area at the back of the establishment. A big flat-screen TV was playing, and my drink order was taken right away. My meal, a chicken fried steak, arrived promptly and was enormous, homemade, and very delicious. Although the building is older, it is clean and well-maintained. The staff went above and beyond to answer all of my many questions about the history of the place, and I truly enjoyed my meal.

The meal felt like a truly home-cooked experience—much better than a steakhouse. I had the meatloaf, while my husband enjoyed the chicken fried steak. Everything was delicious. The restaurant may be a bit old-fashioned, but the food was great, and the staff was very friendly.
