The Moose is Loose used to be a fixture and staple of the town. The previous owners had people from all over the world come to visit their shop. If you were on the Kenai, you HAD to stop at Moose is Loose. Sadly the new owner kept the name but changed everything. Of you're looking for good donuts on the Kenai, go to Brothers Cafe in the Kenai airport... they're the best.
Stopped in after a morning of fishing for Great donuts, friitters, apple turnovers, and coffee drinks.
When you walk into the shop, it’s a very confusing, dull and kind of a dingy gross atmosphere. The donuts are all the way in the back, so you have to walk through this empty weird dark room to get to this very oddly laid out “donut shop” and it is QUIET. DEAD QUIET. Not a radio. Not a noise to be heard, which is adding to this already uncomfortable atmosphere. The lady working today was nice enough. She greeted me. The pastry/donut selection was… probably less than what Safeway has to offer. And right off the bat, I can tell these are not the same donuts this place used to make. (New ownership, I know. I bought a donut anyway, and off I went.My first bite into the maple bar was extremely off putting. The donut seemed almost raw, like it needed a couple more minutes in the fryer. The glaze was sticky. Like, glue sticky. Not your typical glaze consistency. But the most noticeable off putting thing was the donut tasted like chemicals. If you own this shop, and you’re reading this review, you REALLY need to take the advice of the few customers you have left and FIX THIS. This shop is a land mark. A legend. And what your giving… does not match the energy.
You NEED to stop in here for your next donut fix.I had a blueberry fritter. Over 6 and packed with blueberries, somehow it still held together. The huge cream filled my daughter got was amazing. Had a very thick layer of really good custard, unlike anything I've had from a chain bakery, and pretty much edge to edge, not just a squirt in the center.
