This stylish bar within view of the U.S. Canadian border, offers good drinks at reasonable prices and a friendly atmosphere. Too bad it isn't open every day,.
Although this place has been active as a bar for a number of years, it has only had food service for less than a year. The building is a converted bank with very high ceilings and safes still in evidence. Well decorated in an artsy kind of way. There are a number of café tables but just a few sit down tables. The menu is is very basic, mostly sandwiches. We were there on a quiet mid-winter afternoon, looking for a lunch at 2 o'clock, the only customers. Before we got to through the menu or waiter offered the special of the day ... chicken fingers and fries. The special included soup, dessert and coffee. We elected for the special. The soups seemed to be home made. The cream of broccoli was excellent, and the vegetable chicken copious with ample chicken for a soup. Flavour was a bit sharp for my liking but I guess that was due to using fresh tomatoes. The fish fingers, again, seemed to have been made from scratch and the breading seemed to be corn flakes, the fries were crisp and dry and seemed to be seasoned. This extremely simple meal arrived hot and was attractively presented, along with 'dipping sauce', on a long plate. They did not have conventional dipping sauces so we were offered either honey, ketchup or BBQ sauce. None of them were a good match for the fingers ... but at least they tried. The dessert was an apple crumble pie. The waitress apologized for the appearance but it arrived intact and neatly served without additional accompaniment. This was clearly home made and expertly so. Great crisp crust, tender fruit, crunchy crumble ... all held together with a home made caramel. The coffee was standard and acted as a foil against the sweetness of the pie. This turned out to be an unusual but enjoyable meal. The beer situation was a bit precarious. They had the national brands but few interesting imports or local beers. The tab for 2 meals, a beer, tax and tip was less than $30 .... a bargain.Highly recommended for simple fare.
