Everything about it is exceptional—service, dishes, and attention to detail. The omakase style truly elevates the experience. Make sure to add this to your bucket list; it’s a must-visit. The wonderful people of Toledo have no idea how fortunate they are to have such a fantastic option—or maybe they do! I can’t wait to return.
During my first visit, we faced significant delays in receiving our meals. To make matters worse, the table next to us, which seemed to be acquainted with the chef-owner, received prompt and friendly service, while we and other tables were left waiting. In hopes of a better experience, I returned for the omakase course. Unfortunately, my second visit only reinforced my initial impression. Although the pacing of the omakase was reasonable, it became clear that the restaurant prioritizes omakase guests (or the owner's friends) over other patrons. While this isn't inherently an issue, it does suggest that regular customers may not receive the same level of attention or service. Overall, the food here is exceptional and worthy of five stars, but potential regular diners should be prepared for possibly uneven treatment compared to omakase customers or those close to the owner. Additionally, the music was quite loud. Parking can be a challenge, especially during baseball games when finding a spot is nearly impossible. It’s advisable to have a budget of $10 to $20 to navigate this hassle efficiently.
As a solo diner visiting Toledo, I decided to check if Kengo had an available seat at their Omakase bar, and I was thrilled to find out they did. The reviews I had read were completely accurate. The service was excellent and friendly, making me feel right at home. The atmosphere was lively and fast-paced, as it is a cozy little restaurant. That night’s Omakase featured a delightful mix of new dishes I had never tried before, along with some yakitori and nigiri. While it was a bit pricey, it was definitely worth the expense. Kengo is located in a great area in downtown Toledo, right next to the Mud Hens stadium. The owner also runs a ramen restaurant next door and another spot in the Toledo casino, and I’m eager to try all of them!
An absolute GEM of a sushi spot. I've had sushi and omakase tasting menus all over the US and beyond and Kengo is consistently one of my favorites. High quality ingredients prepared expertly. The bartenders also happen to be some of the best in the Toledo.Food: 5/5
Kengo and his Band of Merry Men and Women are the best! Love it! Best Dirty Martini in town. Fish is fantastic. The Spanish mackerel is a dish I aspire to create and at home but just can't get it quite right. The coziness of the place is its charm.Food: 5/5
