The coffee I ordered was barely warm, despite requesting it extra hot. They did remake it when I asked. The croissant was acceptable. My husband ordered avocado on toast with a poached egg, but we waited a long time for it. After inquiring multiple times, it finally arrived. He said it was tasty, despite the long wait. Later, we returned for tea, as there were no other options. My husband had a poor quality focaccia pastrami bap, while I had a scone with butter. Unfortunately, the scone was the worst I've had in my almost 70 years, being very dense and heavy. I could only eat a small bit, and the only good part was the butter. The tea, however, was good. Although I don't mind paying higher prices at these locations for good food, such as at the V&A or National Portrait Gallery, the quality at the IWM cafe was lacking.
The food was terrible and way too expensive. We spent over £40 on 2 sandwiches, 1 bagel, a plate of chips, and 4 drinks. The quality was not worth the high price - the sandwiches were bland, the bread was stale, the bagel was hard enough to break a tooth, and the chips were coated in a strange spicy flavor that didn't taste good.
I stopped for tea one Saturday afternoon after a quick walk around the newly arranged exhibits. The café appeared to be paying homage to wartime catering with a disappointing industrial scone and butter offering, lacking clotted cream or a mini pot of jam. With so many bakeries in London providing high-quality scones, there is no excuse for serving such a lackluster version. Additionally, clotted cream and jam are easily accessible in the UK. My wife tried the 'Victoria Sponge' cake on display, which unfortunately did not resemble the traditional cake at all. It was dry, unappetizing, and tasted industrial. The tea provided with a tea bag was decent. Overall, the café is in need of a major revamp. Serving subpar food at a prestigious institution is unacceptable. Visitors deserve much better, especially considering the prices.
Popped in for a drink and cake with one of my children who was struggling with the crowds, ended up messaging the rest of our group to join us for lunch. We had pizzas £10-12), burgers £9.85), sandwiches can't recall the price, but they were huge) and chips large bowl of fries £4.40). We asked for 2 burgers to come plain, not a problem. Staff were friendly and helpful. Service was quick. The café was clean. Not very big, but we had no problem getting a table for 7 on a summer Saturday lunchtime.
Great menu choices in an incredibly clean facility, and staff was very quick to carry my beverage to a table when they saw I was using a cane.
