I really value restaurants that emphasize authenticity in their offerings. The owner is a wonderful person, and she also manages Ramen Hiroshi! The drinks are excellent and have a distinctive Tokyo vibe. The selection of skewers is extensive and very satisfying. We’ll definitely be back for their fresh fish from Japan on Tuesdays!
Residents of the East Bay are lucky to have access to an authentic and unique Japanese Izakaya, Tozai Izakaya. The restaurant specializes in Japanese BBQ, particularly Yakitori, and offers a range of traditional rice dishes. One highlight is their Wagyu beef, which is cooked on a hot stone—though it comes at a premium price. They also serve whole fish sashimi imported from Japan. A meal for a small family can easily exceed a hundred dollars, making it a less suitable choice for those on a budget. However, if you're in search of a genuine Japanese Izakaya with an array of intriguing and diverse dishes, this is definitely the spot to visit. The service is exceptionally attentive, and the quality of the food is consistently outstanding. After many visits, I can say with confidence that it has never disappointed me.
The food was exceptional. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the seasoning on each dish was perfectly balanced. This is truly the most authentic traditional izakaya experience available in Walnut Creek, and perhaps even in the entire Bay Area. The service was excellent too. We will definitely be coming back!
So i was going to stop at their ramen restaurant but it was temporarily closed for renovations but had a sign with tozais address in the window. After a small walk i found tozai and wow is this place amazing. The place itself is super clean and bright, very modern with a clasic twist. There are sushi restaurants and there and ramen restaurants but this is a Japanese restaurant. From the vegan options to the pork belly to the house made kimchee everything was amazing. Tldr this place is hella dope. Go now! Caution tho the menu will seem different then what you are used to but just read it and start ordering stuff. This stuff is good. Also side note they have a good selection of beer wine sake and even some japanese style cocktails...oh sorry gotta go my order or shishitou peppers and pork belly just hit the table. Seriously tho tlrd> this place is hella good
Quickly becoming my favorite Japanese in the area. Very authentic (no fake sushi rolls, just quality fish) Lunch time has limited menu, dinner time serves yakitori and other grilled items, different donburi, and fresh sashimi. We often get the whole fish sashimi; the bones are fried afterwards for a yummy, crunchy snack. Service staff and chefs are super friendly, many are actually Japanese.
